Sitting here remembering my teens, probs 1971/72 have a photo somewhere, wearing white tights, platform shoes, a short dress, orange, with flowers on it and puffed sleeves. I think my make up was white eye shadow and an orange lipstick.
But those white tights!
Yuk!

Oops! I forgot to say, Lady Diana Spencer liked white tights/stockings when she and Prince Charles were engaged!

All I can say is, thank heavens I had psoriasis on my legs and the doc told my mum 'no tights'!! Nothing nylon, only cotton, so out went my nylon sheets and in came lovely cotton!
I already wore boys pyjamas, so I didn't cost my parents anything more in getting rid of nylon nighties!

Yes, I had some.

Delighted when a friend gave me white daisy pattern tights from Fenwicks for Christmas, 1964. Mary Quant came to Rackhams or Lewis’s Birmingham to launch her range. I wondered why a journalist wore wellies, boots had arrived! Later I had an eye catching pvc mac, colour forgotten, we didn’t take so many photographs in those days. I loved a ‘Courrège style’ green and white heavy cotton minidress and matching coat the next summer. Much easier to wear than the flappy voluminous ‘duster coats’ of a few years earlier. At 5’ I must have resembled a walking tent!

I got married in August 74. I wore white tights and oyster coloured platform shoes. It was a roasting hot day and my dress was full length with long train.. The tights did get seen, though, when I lifted my dress to show my garter 😂

Aaah🥹 the Cat Suit, conjures up Emma Peel in The Avengers tv series.

I am New here, but I remember wearing white tights, had to start shaving my legs ( big big mistake) .

M0nica Wed 22-Jan-25 22:01:58

I got married in 1968, so white tights predate the 1970s, or was I just on the cutting edge of fashion grin

Sleepygran Wed 22-Jan-25 20:47:52

Yes! White tights for me in 1971!

M0nica Wed 22-Jan-25 15:36:17

Thank you all for the memories. In the 60’s I also wore cat suits. Remember going to work in hot pants and pouring a bottle of Patchouli in the bathwater which pervaded the whole house. I remember backcombing and Pompadour laquering my hair before going out, and my friend and I sticking on 3 pairs of eyelashes and false nails!!!! I also LOVED Desert Flower talc and still wear Blue Grass Perfume. The 60’s was a time of “the crazier you dressed the better” and you weren’t afraid to join the Ossie Clark set. I remember Biba’s, London and sitting on the roof of that building in a peacock chair. Such, such happy days!!!

M0nica Wed 22-Jan-25 07:34:07

My wedding outfit was a white mini, with long sleeves and a high neck - and white tights, but I wore them with black patent leather shoes. It was February and cold.

I wore white tights on my wedding day. I also remember my best friend putting her white tights in the washing machine with something red and she came out wearing very pink tights😂 Those were the days….

MrsAF

Oh yes! I wore them on my wedding day but these in the photo were called something like porcelain? Hot pants😜

Nice pic. As I mentioned earlier I had red wet look hot pants with a green apple on the bib.
And I remember having a hairstyle called the shag look in the early 70s.

I have milk bottle legs that don’t tan without the need for white tights but do remember my husband bought me something like a dozen thick white lacy tights in cotton from Liverpool’s George Henry Lee . Didn’t know what to do with them and they practically filled a dustbin liner when we moved house much to the amusement of friends who helped us and saw a heavy bag labelled “Gail’s tights “ . 😀

I wore white lace tights in my early teens - I then progressed to ' mink ' tights from.Freeman Hardy Willis - oh the good old days smilewink

Shizam Tue 21-Jan-25 19:09:38

White tights for ballet! And, yes, someone mentioned white lacy tights for fashion. Also, fingerless lacy long gloves were a thing in the 80s. Now wearing cashmere fingerless gloves to stay warm! How times change.

I don't think tights (AKA panty hose) of any colour were widely available until after the mid 1960s and then only in limited colours.

I am not talking about stage tights of course.

Our school uniform was long white socks or white stockings with suspender belt but this was early 60s. Once I'd left school, and to this day, I will not wear white 'legs' of any kind!

LinAnn52 Tue 21-Jan-25 16:30:01

I was a teenager in the 60’s but don’t recall wearing white tights, possibly because I wouldn’t want my legs to look any fatter than they already were! As a student I did buy a full length double breasted yellow pvc coat. I wore it when I went home one weekend, to the country town where my family lived. My DM couldn’t believe her eyes. She had never seen anything like it!

I love that word: ecru.
Like a milky, creamy,beige.
Ecru.

Our school shirts were 'ecru'. I always associate that word with our uniforms.
