UK Death Penalty - would you like it returned?

Would anyone here like to see the return of the Death Penalty in the UK? If yes, form of death? For which offences?

Personally, whatever the offence, I just don’t think anyone has the right to take another life, not the criminals nor the judiciary. I would also be very worried about wrongful convictions, it is bad enough people have been locked away in error, but at least this can be rectified.

What I’d like to see is a complete overhaul of our justice system and sentencing.

For me, I wouldn’t have anyone locked away for anything other than violent and sexual crimes.

I also know this wouldn’t be allowed, but for rapists and child sexual abuse is like to see chemical castration and for those who murder their children, I’d like to see them sterilised.

For those who subject animals to abuse, I’d bar them for life keeping any animal AND make them do hours and hours of supervised community services in animal sanctuaries.

For those committed pre planned murder, life, the rest of their natural life, behind bars.

Everything else should be subject to things like reparation orders, directly benefitting the victim of the crime.

That’s my view! What’s yours?

No I wouldn't! There have been umpteen miscarriages of justice, it's no good pardoning people after the state has killed them. One only has to cast the mind back to Timothy Evans, Derek Bentley. I don't agree with state sanctioned execution it makes my blood run cold

I would like to see life meaning life for the really terrible violent crimes. Probably there are too many in prison who shouldn't be there, but please whoever the government is stop releasing those who are a danger to society.

I agree with most of your points Cossy.

This is entrely theoretical and pointless.
Yes, horrific crimes have been committed but legalised killing by the state is never going to be morally right.
Plus- you can't go back in time, so what is the point?

Oooh bit snappy.

It’s ok to debate “theoretical” things.

Sorry if this offended or annoyed you!

Would I like to see the return of the death penalty - no, no and no - we are better than that

In some really dreadful indisputable cases my heart says yes.

Fortunately my head quickly takes over, no I wouldn’t like to see the death penalty here in the UK.

OldFrill Wed 05-Feb-25 11:45:26

I don't think anyone who has abused an animal should be allowed anywhere near one, supervised or not.
Other that l agree with the OP

nanna8 Wed 05-Feb-25 11:51:26

No way. There has been so many mistakes in the past with innocent people hung it just wouldn’t be with the risk. Especially with some of the dumb judges around these days.

Yes, I think that's a completely normal and natural reaction. I'm sure if anyone killed one of my family, for instance, I would want them to die a horrible and painful death, but that doesn't make bringing back the death penalty right.
And yes, as far as animal abusers are concerned, I could happily inflict the same on them.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 05-Feb-25 11:54:04

No.

Ilovecheese Wed 05-Feb-25 11:54:31

No

No

Smileless2012 Wed 05-Feb-25 11:55:25

In some dreadful indisputable cases my heart says yes so does mine GrannyGravy so TBH I can't say either way but life should mean life.

Anniebach Wed 05-Feb-25 11:57:36

No, innocent people were hanged

maddyone Wed 05-Feb-25 11:57:37

Absolutely not. No death penalty in the UK.

If capital punishment were to re-introduced to Britain I would apply for Irish citizenship and, if possible, emigrate.

The death penalty has no place in, so called, civilised society. Far too many innocent people were killed for crimes they did not commit in the past.

Statistically, it does not act as a deterrent as most killers do not intend to be caught. The states in the USA which still have capital punishment do not have significantly lower murder rates than those that don't.

I have heard the 'Why should the taxpayer have to pay to keep blah blah blah' argument countless times, my reply is, because the alternative is so much worse.

People also say "How would you feel if it were your child, partner, parent, or friend who had been murdered?" I would hope I would still feel the same way but it has yet to happen so I don't know for sure.

When I was a teenager I joined a demonstration against the death penalty which took place in London. My opinion about it has not changed.

Cold Wed 05-Feb-25 12:03:25

No

We've seen many miscarriages of justice in recent years

NonGrannyMoll Wed 05-Feb-25 12:05:24

The problem with capital punishment is that the justice system isn't infallible.

Elegran Wed 05-Feb-25 12:06:20

If it is wrong for a killer to take a life, it is also wrong for anyone to take the life even of a convicted killer.

NonGrannyMoll Wed 05-Feb-25 12:06:53

Sorry, I should have said, "one of the problems". There are of course moral and ethical problems too.

Claremont Wed 05-Feb-25 12:07:39

No, never.

Death is the easy route anyhow, but that is not the point.

Sago Wed 05-Feb-25 12:08:18

No!

If a guilty prisoner opted to be euthanised then that’s OK with me.

joannapiano Wed 05-Feb-25 12:09:24

Never.

Barleyfields Wed 05-Feb-25 12:11:18

No. Innocent people have been hanged. Now Lucy Letby’s guilt is being seriously questioned by experts. If a death sentence had been available she would probably be dead.

Grandma70s Wed 05-Feb-25 12:12:03

Absolutely not. We are, I hope, a civilised nation.
