Make-up advice/suggestions please

I've never been fussed about make-up. I only wear it occasionally, probably don't apply it properly, and my hands are now a tad unsteady. My eyelashes are short and pretty thin, and lipstick simply disappears after a few minutes, leaving my lips almost the same colour as the surrounding skin!

At 73 I've decided to "up my game" to avoid looking much older than I really am. But I haven't a clue where to start. My DM lived her life with a bit of powder, a dash of rouge, and a swipe of lipstick (that disappeared after a few minutes). She never even owned a mascara.

So, advice please girls on how to equip myself with a basic set of cosmetics. Not pricey, nothing outrageous, but above all quick and easy to apply (I'm serially impatient).

I've a pale complexion, blue eyes (but I wear specs so not that noticeable) and a fair share of wrinkles (though not such that I look haggard).

I did once have a make-over in Debenhams, and I looked fine with it, but couldn't achieve the same look myself, and the stuff cost a fortune - to me.

Try looking at Look Fabulous Forever videos on Youtube. It’s a make up brand made specially for older women and the videos show how to apply make up on older faces - all of them are clients.

You could do a lot worse than Laura Geller mineral powder. Fluffed on with a brush, it blends in well - not too much coverage and doesn’t look cakey.

I’m your age and I wear a full face every day - for me.

I’m 72 all I wear is foundation mascara and lipstick…..
At my age, I think less is more…

Trisha99 Mon 10-Mar-25 22:24:08

I’d suggest Maybelline Superstay Matt Ink lipstick, you paint it on like a lip gloss, it drys and stays in place all day.
I use number 180 Warm Blush Pink, I find it looks just a bit stronger than natural lip colour, but there are lots of shades to choose from. It’s available in Boots but also from Amazon for around £10.
I wear this, a bit of blusher and sometimes mascara, hardly ever foundation as tbh I can’t be bothered.smile

Do you have a Primark near you? They do a good range at a much lower price. Don’t start off with the expensive brands while you’re experimenting. They have testers.
With mascara make sure you apply it under your top eyelid.
Lift your eyelid and you’ll see a real difference despite the fact that your lashes are thin.
Given time you can then go onto serums, primers, concealers.
But basics first.
Don’t forget your eyebrows. You can do all the slap but unless you pretty up your brows you won’t get the full affect.

Buy Avon products on Amazon, really good and not expensive and last well.
As for lipsticks, again look on Amazon at lip stains, they stay on all day.

Primary is a good call, and a browse around Boots will show you that there are lots of inexpensive ranges.
In your shoes, I'd start with a tinted foundation, mascara, and a little pink blusher .
I like a tinted lip bam rather than lipstick.
Have fun with it.

Unless you have a high colour, I find blusher, carefully applied, can give you a lift. Without it, I look completely washed out. A little foundation first, I don't overdo it though.

Unfortunately my lashes seem to be short and sparse now so I end up jabbing ,myself or getting mascara on my eyelids but still keep persevering. A touch of eyebrow pencil and I'm nearly there.

The thing I need help with is lipstick- one that's not too dry but moister ones don't seem to last.

I like Clinique and Clarins but they're a bit pricey of you're experimenting to find what suits you.

Oh - and moisturise first but not just before you apply foundation.

*petra" Primark isn't near me but it just so happens I have a hospital appointment next week in the nearest large town, which DOES have a giant Primark.

Oreo I used to buy Avon stuff years ago, will take a look.

Maybelline is definitely in my price range!

Thanks everyone.

I suggest going into Boots or into a department store and asking one of the beauty counters for help. Explain you want a light make up for everyday. Try No 7 or Clinique.

J52 Tue 11-Mar-25 09:58:41

As we age our skin tends to pale along with our brows, eyelashes and lips.
After trying many foundation creams I now go with No7 with SPF protection. The beauty assistant will advise you. I have just discovered ELF eye products, their light brow pencil with brush and eyeliner felt tip are great and very inexpensive. For Mascara after many trials, I’m now going with Charlotte Tilbury. Clarins Lip Protector lip sticks are great and give a colour without heaviness.
BTW Clinique products are an American company and made in the USA. Depends on your point of view at the moment.

I would say go for a tinted moisturiser rather than a foundation. A light cover is less aging than a coat of foundation.

I agree with that. I use Nars tinted moisturiser, which is brilliant, pretty good coverage with a bit of glow, easy to blend and SPF30.

If you want to go down the foundation route Bare Minerals along with a big brush!

On the odd occasion I do wear make up I use this!

Oh and maybe get your lashes tinted and lifted!

When I had several weddings to attend a few years ago, I visited Boots.
And then chose a few items.
Cost was about £35 for what I chose.

fancythat Sat 15-Mar-25 20:21:18

I meant to say, I asked the Boots make up assistants for their advice.

I bought several of their eyeliners and couldn’t get on with them at all. Quite dry to put on and don’t blend very well.

for a lippy, I have the Maybelline SuperStay Lip Crayon; it lasts ages. I have a peachy one, and a pinky one. Cheap as chips.

I swear by L'Oreal Telescopic masacara; not expensive and isn't too thick and clumpy.

Also a tinted moisturizer; I own a Canadian brand, but in UK check out Boots No7 or La Roche Posay, both good drug store brands.

I don't wear blush, so can't advise, but I do get my eyebrows shaped and tinted every few months to keep them visible and tidy. Go ahead and treat yourself, I'm sure you are beautiful just as you are, but a bit of makeup can give you a boost.

I agree with Suki70. Look Fabulous Forever and their simple, clear videos and excellent products have been a saviour for me. Have received so many compliments too. A very natura "does she/doesn't she" effect.

Good on you!
Can make so much difference.
And improves my own mood.
I like Nivea daydream, its tinted moisturiser and a bit of blusher.
Then you can play with the cover things, maybelline do a good one.
A lipstick, go for a nice bright one!
Superdrug is a good place.
And treat yourself to a store makeup.
Having said that I love Charlotte Tilbury,darlings....

I started using Laura Geller baked foundation and blusher a few months ago I was recommend it by my niece it's so quick to apply and natural looking

Dempie55 Sun 16-Mar-25 14:01:07

I’m another Laura Geller fan - I have a large compact with foundation, blusher and highlighter, just brush it on and blend in, very quick. I dye my brows and eyelash myself, and just use a Rimmel kohl eyeliner pencil. I like Maybelline gloss lipsticks.

Schnackie2 Sun 16-Mar-25 14:02:12

I am 72 and have used Max Factor Lipfinity for years. It truly stays on all day, even with eating and drinking. Just today I have seen some videos for what is called Colour Changing Foundation for Mature Skin. There are several different brands (I picked one on Amazon). It is apparently a white cream which becomes the colour of your skin when applied. I've ordered some and will give it a try. Like Madmeg I have never worn much make up but am also trying to 'up my game'.

FlexibleFriend Sun 16-Mar-25 14:13:22

I just concentrate on my eyes these days as I still have quite long lashes but have found my lips have disappeared and now just have a line below my nose where my lips should be. Seriously starting to think about fillers. Also my cheeks are red and the skin has thickened (rosacea)??? and nothing seems to work on them to either hide or disguise. On the bright side I have thick hair and virtually zero wrinkles.
