Make-up advice/suggestions please

Laura Geller baked brightening you can't beat it just put it on with a blusher brush it takes a minute or two no heavy creams etc...I love it

I like Maybelline mascara .
Revolution make huge eyeshadow palettes which are fun to experiment with .
Rimmel ,Avon and L'Oréal foundations are fine .
Avon make good brow products ,blusher and bronzer .
Always cleanse and hydrate your skin .
Nivea is great .
Apply sun block .
Invest in some make up brushes .
Always have a box of tissues and cotton buds at hand .
I pace myself when applying make up. I don't slap it on at once .

Firstly I apply clean my skin with baby lotion on cotton wool.
Add a little moisturiser.
Later some sun block .
Let it settle.
I have my breakfast !

Then I apply my make up.
I apply some foundation .
Brush excess blusher on the back of your hand before applying.
Don't forget to shape your brows - they frame your eyes .
Mascara is important.
I vary my eye shadow - I like the smokey look .
Use cotton buds to remove mistakes.
Apply some lipstick .
Blot on a tissue .
After a few minutes-look in a mirror and gently tissue off any excess concentrating on the chin avoiding a tide mark.
If you aren't used to wearing make up you can feel like Coco the clown - don't plaster it on and don't be afraid of wiping off any excess .

This is late and you may not see it but I did a little stint as a make-up artist for cosmetic companies in department stores and my philosophy stands stronger at this age (I'm same as you): "You should never see the make-up on your face. You should only see what it's doing for you"

If you can afford it, go to Bobby Brown for make up advice and get them to make you up. Their stuff is not cheap but aimed at looking natural and for us older women. Also Look Fabulous Forever has lots of videos online to help and their products are nice too.

Oh, girls, thanks for all this advice. But there are so many makes and ranges that it is making me dizzy. I will have to construct a spreadsheet to whittle things down, and with my luck I will make my choices and then find the shops don't have them! I'm interested in the lip-colour ideas cos my lips are non-existent nowadays.

I've been hunting for a blue eyeshadow for months but Boots tell me no-one wants it these days, it's all creams and browns.

Blue eye shadow is hard to find and may date you. Most eye shadows are neutrals these days. Have you got a good skincare regime - that's the first step.

The problem with your lipstick isn't necessarily the colour. It may be (very likely) your lips are less defined than they were when you were younger. The biggest problem with makeup and growing older is that everything becomes less defined but you need subtlety when redefining them. If you haven't been using a liner all your life you will need to practise; in this case with a lip brush or pencil.

Practise is fun. It was fun in your teens and should be fun now. If you can, encourage friends to talk about their tricks and tips just as you would about styling your clothes. In both cases trend/fashion are less important than style/how you wear them

Family teenagers can be useful to bring you up to date with what's available but they don't have your problems and you don't have theirs so it's got to be a fun conversation. They can also instruct you on "dupes". That has been a big win for me!

Believe me I've tried blotting lipstick (and using foundation first) and it makes no difference. My bottom lip is also quite "thin" so I never know how to outline it.

My skin-care regime is pathetic. As said in other threads, DH is serially untidy so although I have bought good-quality skincare products I can never find them. Just had a search around and I've got nine pots of the stuff, all unopened - I even asked for some for Christmas - and got two pots.

My makeup takes 10 minutes. Look Fabulous Forever primer makes skin smooth and velvety, and blurs pores and lines. DAB of concealer (Laura Mercier) under eyes. Smudge of grey eye pencil (Hourglass or Avon Glimmer Stick) between roots of top eyelashes. Taupe eyeshadow (very ancient Bobbi Brown) in crease and under eyes. One coat of LFF waterproof mascara on top lashes. Smudge of natural or pink lip colour - Maybelline lip crayon, lasts a good eight hours. After my ten minutes first thing I don’t touch my face again unless going out in the evening.

As for skin care, you obviously have plenty of products which I hope include eye makeup remover and a creamy cleanser. I don’t understand why you can never find things, I keep mine in my drawer in the bathroom.

Same here PN. A small amount of makeup makes a huge difference to how I look and feel. I’m not saying this about you Jaxjacky but when out and about I see so many older women without a scrap of makeup and they generally look tired, washed out and old. Such a shame when just a small outlay and a very few minutes would make them look so much better. Their choice of course. On the other hand, a ‘face full’ can also be very ageing, not a look I aspire to.

I’ve been age checked three times this year for over 60’s discounts/vaccination Barleyfields so I assume I don’t look too old.
I’m fortunate with good skin, very few lines, dark lashes and clearly defined full lips.

Not a lost cause Madmeg, just living the life you want to live

I’ll be 70 later this year and have always enjoyed making up my face. I’m fairly wrinkle free and just tend to use a moisturiser, primer and blusher on my face. I use a lip liner, then apply lipstick to my lips. For my eyes I use a neutral base colour all over the lid then something a little deeper in colour over the crease line continuing to the lash line. I use a kohl pencil on my lower lid finished off with mascara. I use an eyebrow pencil to define my brows. I’ve always used Estée Lauder which isn’t cheap but it does seem to last and give good coverage. I’ve tried having my lashes and brows tinted but found the results to be short lived.

OP, have a look at Lisa Eldridge’s videos on her website - she has some for mature skin, and she lists all the products she uses for quick reference!

Less is more with me. One woman doing demonstrations and selling makeup gave up on me!

Less is definitely more as we get older. Subtle enhancement looks way better than loads of obvious slap.

More time doesn't have to equal more makeup. It can just mean more care.

To be honest, if you're happy with you and I'm happy with me the world can be a pleasent place for each person. It's certainly not a competition.

You could buy blue mascara too.

But apparently passé now, according to Boots MadMeg although it is widely available.

I remember wearing blue eyeshadow back in the day. Now - no way. 😱

I have never worn blue eye shadow but a quick search on Ebay reveals that there are several blue eye shadow pallets for sale..

Not sure which poster was looking for it...
