What were Beecham’s Powders?
I remember them well and am sure my mother gave me lots.
They had a bitter taste.
I also remember something called Seidlitz (sp) powders.
They caused a huge row with mother , who always knew best and liked her own way.
We were staying for a few days and my infant D wasn’t well.
My mother said she would fetch some from the chemist and I said if she did I would leave.
She was very very cross with me but knew when a line was drawn.
I don’t remember bags of aspirin but you could buy large bottles with no problem and they were widely used.

I remember Beecham's Powders, mixed with water in a little tumbler. They contained aspirin and caffeine, probably not good for children at all.

Seidlitz powders were for indigestion, I think.

We used to give babies gripe water that contained alcohol (although I don't think we realised that) years ago 😯

I can remember buying paracetermol in packs of 100, not that long ago, until the new laws came in.

I can remember big bottles of Aspirin and no regulations on buying Paracetamol - until it was found that taking just a few too many could cause lifelong damage (and much worse, of course).

I still have a medicine box - actually 2 large ice cream cartons with the usual over the counter meds - painkillers, anti inflammatories, TCP, plasters, bandages, antiseptic cream, remedy for indigestion, honey barrier cream, Bonjela etc. Kept in a high kitchen cupboard.

I have a First Aid box and I also have a First Aid Travel kit.

Yes, we've got a First Aid box but other things, like a sling, knee support, etc are all over the place.

We like Germolene antiseptic cream but it's increasingly difficult to find. None on the shelves in our Boots.

Yes, I do keep a first aid box but these days it is a quite small container, with reserve monthly stock of medicines I need and others for DGC emergencies.

However, when my DC were small, medicines took up a large space. This was because after a visit to the doctor’s , I took the prescription to the pharmacy, where we were given medicine sold in packets from the manufacturer, not split up and counted out like in the UK. So if you had to take one tablet for ten days and the packet had twelve you kept the two odd ones left incase it could be used with another prescription within the date limit.

There was a time, many years ago that pharmacies excepted in-date medicine, to be redistributed 3rd world countries but it was found certain people in the trade were reselling them. At that time, about twenty years ago you paid for the medicine but got refunded through your bank.

These days, we don’t pay for the majority of medicines in France, if the doctor has prescribed them, but you have to show your medical identity card. Sadly there are still leftover half packets.

I bought Germolene in a tube yesterday Allira from the Boots downstairs to us.

Pretty sure it was the late 90s that the law came in to limit number that could be bought otc

Last time I asked the assistant said if it's not on the shelf we haven't got it, but that was a while ago!
Tesco sometimes has it.

Rather than a nice neat medicine box we had a rather untidy little chest of drawers - containing first aid essentials and various slings bandages and supports. Medicines are still on a top shelf even though our son is now far taller than either of us!

Pleased to hear that Boots have Germolene again. When I asked for it last year, the assistant told me that they had stopped selling Germolene products.

Not many years ago, doctors used to prescribe large quantities of Paracetamol to patients. I was a domicilliary carer and often went to elderly people who had hundreds of them.

Gripe water is still around but doesn't contain alcohol now. I used to like Lion ointment, which was good for a lot of things, but is now only available on Amazon.

Oh yes, I had forgotten that.

My Auntie used to take something called (I think) 'Andrews Liver Salts' daily, not sure what that was all about.

My First Aid box is the beige plastic Mothercare baby box that one of our friends bought us for when we had our first DD - that was 42 years ago! Large cantilevered with a shallow tray on the top. Anyone else remember them?!

I swear by Beechams Powders! Think it stems from teenage years when I often had bad bouts of tonsillitis . I still use them if I am under the weather. I also remember those little bottles of aspirin with the cotton wool in the neck of the bottle.

We have a first aid box in the kitchen, another in the car and a little one that comes out with me whenever I go out with GCn. Lots of things can be fixed with a dab of water and

I have never used the sterile dressings and micropore though (not cool!).

I still use my Mothercare box ( grey in my case) - it’s now my sewing box.

I have just googled Beecham’s powders, still sold, and they are Aspirin and caffeine.
I didn’t know Aspirin was still freely sold, I assume the pharmacist is sent for and a warning issued.
