Many years ago my neighbour’s teenage daughter didn’t answer the door because she couldn’t be bothered.
The next thing she found an intruder climbing in through an open window at the back of the house.
A clever idea that didn’t pay off for him in that instance.

I look out to see who it is first, and decide then whether to answer or not.

I do, without thinking, although I sometimes look through the front window to see if I know who it is.
This morning I thought I heard a knock at 6.30 a.m. but by the time I had put on my dressing gown etc I realised it was highly unlikely, so looked through front window, and realised I had not put out my food pail for the bin collection.

Maybe not naive but definitely a careless typist…..that should have been a small market town in Yorkshire! 🤦‍♀️

I usually just open the door without a 2nd thought! Having done that all of the 40 years we lived in London I’ve not felt the need to act differently since we moved to a small Yorkshire. I like
to think I’m not naive just a realistic optimist!

No, not always. I may sound mean, but I have one neighbour/friend who knocks almost daily. There’s only so much I can listen to, her family (widow, no children) who don’t visit, all the young men in the pub, who want to date her (she is 85). One wants to whisk her off on a cruise. Maybe I’m jealous, but I’m just about tired of hearing the same old, same old …….so , I don’t answer her knock, 4 days out of 7 😂

I opened the door one evening to find a young man shivering and shaking on the doorstep, saying a gang was after him, could he come in. We live in a quiet cul-de-sac in a quiet(ish) town.

Of course I didn't let him in but I did let him shelter behind the garden wall and said I'd ring the police if he wished. He didn't want that.
The gang didn't come here and he must have just gone.

But it did make me think twice about opening the door, especially as I was on my own with the DC.

No. I just open the door to a knock, like Elowen33

I dont look first, I assume someone that wanted to do me harm would not knock on the door first.

Maybe you would feel more comfortable with a ring doorbell then you could see who it is and speak without answering the door.

I dont think you are neurotic, you are just doing what makes you feel safer.

We have a video doorbell and can see who is approaching through our front window.
We try to avoid unwanted callers like salespeople and religious groups, but I'm happy to chat with political canvassers and delivery people.

I’ve lived in my small 2 bed end of terrace house for 14 years.
I’m in a small off shoot of a small road-the end of three houses.
I’m right up against a very high fence so there’s no where to go after my house therefore it feels bit isolated as no one would walk by etc.
Don’t think I’m overly neurotic but I can honestly say I have never opened the door to an unexpected knock or the bell!
I dash up stairs and look out the bedroom window.
If I’m expecting a visitor then I’m usually in the kitchen so can see them coming.
Anyone else this cautious?
