I’ve lived in my small 2 bed end of terrace house for 14 years.
I’m in a small off shoot of a small road-the end of three houses.
I’m right up against a very high fence so there’s no where to go after my house therefore it feels bit isolated as no one would walk by etc.
Don’t think I’m overly neurotic but I can honestly say I have never opened the door to an unexpected knock or the bell!
I dash up stairs and look out the bedroom window.
If I’m expecting a visitor then I’m usually in the kitchen so can see them coming.
Anyone else this cautious?

We have a video doorbell and can see who is approaching through our front window.
We try to avoid unwanted callers like salespeople and religious groups, but I'm happy to chat with political canvassers and delivery people.

I dont look first, I assume someone that wanted to do me harm would not knock on the door first.

Maybe you would feel more comfortable with a ring doorbell then you could see who it is and speak without answering the door.

I dont think you are neurotic, you are just doing what makes you feel safer.

No. I just open the door to a knock, like Elowen33

I opened the door one evening to find a young man shivering and shaking on the doorstep, saying a gang was after him, could he come in. We live in a quiet cul-de-sac in a quiet(ish) town.

Of course I didn't let him in but I did let him shelter behind the garden wall and said I'd ring the police if he wished. He didn't want that.
The gang didn't come here and he must have just gone.

But it did make me think twice about opening the door, especially as I was on my own with the DC.

No, not always. I may sound mean, but I have one neighbour/friend who knocks almost daily. There’s only so much I can listen to, her family (widow, no children) who don’t visit, all the young men in the pub, who want to date her (she is 85). One wants to whisk her off on a cruise. Maybe I’m jealous, but I’m just about tired of hearing the same old, same old …….so , I don’t answer her knock, 4 days out of 7 😂

I usually just open the door without a 2nd thought! Having done that all of the 40 years we lived in London I’ve not felt the need to act differently since we moved to a small Yorkshire. I like
to think I’m not naive just a realistic optimist!

grannyqueenie Mon 14-Apr-25 12:03:19

Maybe not naive but definitely a careless typist…..that should have been a small market town in Yorkshire! 🤦‍♀️

eazybee Mon 14-Apr-25 12:07:11

I do, without thinking, although I sometimes look through the front window to see if I know who it is.
This morning I thought I heard a knock at 6.30 a.m. but by the time I had put on my dressing gown etc I realised it was highly unlikely, so looked through front window, and realised I had not put out my food pail for the bin collection.

Many years ago my neighbour’s teenage daughter didn’t answer the door because she couldn’t be bothered.
The next thing she found an intruder climbing in through an open window at the back of the house.
A clever idea that didn’t pay off for him in that instance.

I look out to see who it is first, and decide then whether to answer or not.

Yes…

silverlining48 Mon 14-Apr-25 12:15:38

I have a metal thing which stops the front door from opening more than a little way. It’s not a chain, but similar idea.
I don’t use it much and just open the door, it’s usually my neighbour but think i should be more careful as we don’t have houses opposite so no one would necessarily notice a problem.

My cottage sits in the middle of its own garden, behind a high wall. Anyone who knocks on my door has already come onto my land. If I couldn't see them through the hall window I wouldn't open the door.

Hellogirl1 Mon 14-Apr-25 12:23:49

My, family tell me I should keep the door locked all the time, but I don`t lock it till 8pm, unless I`m going upstairs for any length of time. If anyone knocks I answer, so far I`ve survived!

Blossoming Mon 14-Apr-25 12:32:40

No I don’t. For one thing I can’t get to the front door if I’m in on my own. Any expected callers have the key safe code to let themselves in.

We did try a ring doorbell but it didn’t work for us.

Mil was always paranoid about answering the door and would rush upstairs to see who it was before answering the door. On one occasion she didn’t call out “who’s there?” but hid in the kitchen. Next thing there was the smashing of glass in a lounge window. She then rushed to the lounge. The breakers in saw her and scarpered pdq. She then ran out into the street after them! She was lucky. So please don’t just ignore the doorbell. Yell something out even if it’s only “Fred, doorbell”

I do during the day . But after 7pm always check through the door and shout who is it and only open it if it's a delivery I was expecting. But my walking stick is handy to hit any would be attacker. 😁

rosie1959 Mon 14-Apr-25 12:46:07

I just answer the door never thought of looking out first, then again my husband is usually around. Both now pensioners but he's 6'4 and built like a brick outhouse.

GrannyIvy Mon 14-Apr-25 12:47:10

I always keep the doors locked and always check who it is before opening the door. When I was younger I never had doors locked and my mum was always telling me I must keep the front door locked now I have turned into her ensuring my DD’s keep their doors locked😂

Georgesgran Mon 14-Apr-25 13:06:12

Yes, but this is a small development, slightly off the beaten track, so we don’t get many ‘strangers’.

kircubbin2000 Mon 14-Apr-25 13:11:10

My bell broke and I haven't replaced it. I can usually see out the window if anyone calls but anyone who knows me goes round the back or raps the window.

boheminan Mon 14-Apr-25 13:13:13

I don't want a Ring doorbell, so have a peep keyhole fitted in my front door that enables me to see directly anyone standing outside the door. Works for me.

Grandmabatty Mon 14-Apr-25 13:17:37

I always open the front door, but it has four glass panels in it so I can easily see who is there. I get cold callers occasionally but send them packing. It wouldn't occur to me not to answer the door

Oldbat1 Mon 14-Apr-25 13:21:38

I dont need have my doors locked. I have dogs who spend all their day “on duty” watching. They only bark if a stranger walk passed. My front door is glass.

Mt61 Mon 14-Apr-25 13:31:02

Video door bell, with voice over. Glass front door also.. if we are in the conservatory we can see who is at the door. I am paranoid about security, as we had a spate of break ins around our area. The door is locked at all times.
