Louis Theroux - The Settlers

Forgive me if someone’s already posted a thread about this but what do people think about the Louis Theroux documentary The Settlers? I knew it would be uncomfortable viewing but have forced myself to watch it.
To see the sociopathic (his words) Daniella Weiss try to justify what’s happening in the West Bank and the settlers’ determination to enter Gaza was utterly chilling.
She smiles but her eyes are filled with evil. Theroux surpassed himself; he is so measured in his communication and simply allows his interviewees to expose themselves for what they are.

We did indeed leave the mess behind, as with other post WW2 decision like the division of India/Pakistan.

For all practical purposes (after the Balfour promise and WW2)

Israel was carved out of an area that had been lived in by both Jewish and Arab (and some Christian) peoples for centuries. It left remaining lands for Palestinians, the West Bank and Gaza.

Israeli settlements in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, as well as in the Syrian Golan Heights, are illegal under international law. These settlements are in violation of Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, and in breach of international declarations.

Theroux was wrong to say on TikTok “the Palestinians have been there for centuries “ !

No, he wasn't. How on earth can you support that?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 30-Apr-25 16:51:04

Where have they been then if not there?

Abraham is the original patriarch of Judaism and he came from Chaldea.

It is nonsense to say, 'We were here first...', like kids would do in a playground.

The present situation is almost wholly due to the British promising the Palestinians their own land in the Balfour declaration and then leaving the state of Israel to renege on that agreement.

We walked away with disastrous consequences for the Palestinian people to our shame.

If it’s who lived there first the answer is Jews

No, it's not - if you really want to delve back into ancient history.

Thats given me some interesting historical wanderings.

"Jews and Arabs Descended from Canaanites"

But it's not really helpful in terms of - does what happened 13th century BC give some current day Israelis the "right" to occupy the West Bank?

Theroux is on TikTok saying Palestinians been in West Bank
for centuries, he thinks important

According to my DNA I am a Celt - so I reckon my claim is pretty much up there😊

StoneofDestiny Wed 30-Apr-25 14:29:14

Oh please ........let's undo the world. Let's make way for believers in Manifest Destiny. Gut wrenching to listen to yet another gun toting American whose ancestors took land from Native Americans as "god intended" and called it their land and now claim the homeland they are entitled to is Israel. Seriously. No different from the Nazis claiming more living space for their superior race.

Prepare to pack up and leave Britain while those here first stake a claim as god intended maybe.......

Wondered how long before Canaan would be brought up,

Whitewavemark2 Wed 30-Apr-25 14:11:20

Oh there was me thinking it was the Canaanite’s.

Opinions are going to differ according to whether one agrees its OK for some Israeli citizens to be occupying land on the West Bank at all never mind the ways they are enforcing it.

If only when the State of Israel was established, Palestine was also given status of Statehood.

Nothing in Gaza before 7 October 2023 ? all threads have spoken of Hamas revenge , they had no reason to be vengeful,!

What are you trying to say?

I really think you should look up the difference between Gaza and the West Bank. They have had very different leaders since 2005 and Israel has treated them differently.

One of the difficulties in finding a permanent solution has been that Hamas won't accept Fatah rule.

The documentary is about settlers in the West Bank. Up to now, there has been no Israeli settlement in Gaza, which is why it was significant seeing the plans which have been drawn up.

The hostages were taken by Hammas based in Gaza, but the measures against Palestinians in the West Bank have been going on since 1967.

Anniebach Wed 30-Apr-25 09:07:24

Both are Palestinian territories, do tell the difference

So West Bank and Gaza both Palestinian Territories but one is
free for reporters and documentary makers but one isn’t

That's right. Do you not realise they're different?

Strange, we read often no aid, no reporters allowed yet Theroux walks in with a camera crew
Recently BBC broadcast a documentary on the brutality taking place in West Bank then quickly withdraw it with an apology,
the docu makers had recorded members of Hamas families as witnesses

You're confusing Gaza with the West Bank.

What’s the point of international laws Stone if they can’t be enforced? The only glimmer of hope was seeing the Israeli activists who abhor the situation and put themselves at risk.
The soldiers wouldn’t have been out of place in the SS - despicable thugs.

LaCrepescule Wed 30-Apr-25 05:39:34

I understand totally MayBee. It left me feeling so sad and helpless. Daniella Weiss is 79 and my only hope is that she won’t be around for much longer.

MayBee70 Tue 29-Apr-25 21:09:34

I know I need to watch it but a) I don’t think it will tell me anything I don’t already know and b) it will make me very very angry and I’m sadly ( for my own sanity) tending to avoid political stuff for a while…
