Renewing driving licence

Has anyone seen the new rules for renewing a driving licence when you're 70?
I've been looking and it would seem that from August 1st you have to get a form from doctor to say that you're ok to drive.
Checks for cognitive awareness, heating and vision
If you pass you're issued with a form to send to DVLA with your application.
I'm wondering how this is going to work ,given that it's difficult to obtain GP appointments.

I don’t think that is correct.

Charleygirl5 Sun 10-Aug-25 16:51:09

My GP will charge at least £35 for the letter and probably more because he would have to test your sight and hearing.

If it is true I think many may well find themselves selling their pride and joy.

You’re wrong Dollydaydream. You just need to answer some questions about your fitness to drive. Look on Gov.uk.

This is the current info regarding licence renewal aged 70 on the gov.uk official site . Nothing has changed. It’s a self assessment with no GP input. That’s not to say it won’t change in the future but for now the situation remains the same.

I thought it was odd. I read that you had to get firm D 4 and send with application. Would send link if I could work out how to do it smile

Maybe Dolly had a daydream 🤷‍♀️

Be careful when renewing online. I went on the Gov.uk website to do mine in April a few months before my 70th and was redirected to another website, stating that as I wasn’t quite 70 this is the website I needed to use. It was Assistonline.uk but I was fleeced! They charged £78!

I was taken in by this. I think this website is anticipating what might lie in the future. I found it impossible to complete online as they wanted an actual photo (like a passport photo) which cost me £5 in Sainsburys photo booth.
I duly filled in the paper form and included the photo. New licence in post this week. It is for 3 years until I am 85. After that, I shall have a hard think about continuing driving.
In passing, I read there are a number of people licensed to drive over the age of 100! This can't be safe.

It’s all proposed, not law and renewal is free

Shelflife Sun 10-Aug-25 18:06:26

I renewed mine but not online . There may be changes ahead - but not imminent as far as I know.

It’s not free. It’s £14 on the Gov.uk website

Georgesgran Sun 10-Aug-25 19:00:33

It’s definitely free at 70 Poppy and every 3 years afterwards.

Cabbie21 Sun 10-Aug-25 19:00:34

Not £14 , it is free if you are over 70, unless you have maybe changed your name.

Retroladywriting Sun 10-Aug-25 19:13:29

There has been a thread on this in the last few weeks. I think the consensus was that it's only necessary to state that one is ok to drive. I think the OP has been looking at the wrong website - also the earlier OP too.

Retroladywriting Sun 10-Aug-25 19:14:00

And it's definitely free.

Oldbat1 Sun 10-Aug-25 22:08:17

Ive just renewed mine. It is free. Had to confirm if I had any of the medical issues on form and if I had prescribed glasses. Had to provide a new photograph.

LOUISA1523 Mon 11-Aug-25 08:29:38

Its free...I did my mums for her....just a couple of questions ....very easy to navigate

It’s not free. It’s £14 on the Gov.uk website

If you paid Poppy it was either not straightforward or a scam site.

But there are changes planned. This was discussed on this morning's BBC R4 Today programme.

Cabbie21 Mon 11-Aug-25 09:09:29

A good thing too. Too many deaths caused by drivers with poor vision. Proper, automatic reporting by GP or optician should be mandatory, as drivers will not do so.

PoliticsNerd Mon 11-Aug-25 14:00:43

I've just re-applied over the weekend and wasn't asked for anything. I did say no to all the conditions on their list, however. Perhaps, if you say 'yes' to any of them they might need to know the extent to which it could affect your driving?

The changes being suggested are:

Changes to the eyesight test. A compulsory annual eye test from either (suggested) 70 or 75.

There seemed to be more chat on Today about young drivers.

kjmpde Mon 11-Aug-25 14:04:49

today it is said that if you fail the eyesight test after 70 then you will be banned from driving . so my question is does that mean if you are under 70 and fail you can continue?

I think eyesight tests should be compulsory (at least every 5 years) if you drive a car. Regardless of age

M0nica Mon 11-Aug-25 17:57:01

I have just renewed my driving licence online, carefully ensuring that I was on the genuine .gov site. It took minutes to do.

Margiknot Mon 11-Aug-25 18:39:43

I think if you need to maintain the C1 entitlement to drive a bigger vehicle such as a motorhome or small van, then the OP is correct, otherwise the renewed license automatically removes this entitlement.
