It’s definitely free at 70 Poppy and every 3 years afterwards.

Jaxjacky

It’s all proposed, not law and renewal is free

It’s not free. It’s £14 on the Gov.uk website

I renewed mine but not online . There may be changes ahead - but not imminent as far as I know.

I was taken in by this. I think this website is anticipating what might lie in the future. I found it impossible to complete online as they wanted an actual photo (like a passport photo) which cost me £5 in Sainsburys photo booth.
I duly filled in the paper form and included the photo. New licence in post this week. It is for 3 years until I am 85. After that, I shall have a hard think about continuing driving.
In passing, I read there are a number of people licensed to drive over the age of 100! This can't be safe.

Be careful when renewing online. I went on the Gov.uk website to do mine in April a few months before my 70th and was redirected to another website, stating that as I wasn’t quite 70 this is the website I needed to use. It was Assistonline.uk but I was fleeced! They charged £78!

Maybe Dolly had a daydream 🤷‍♀️

I thought it was odd. I read that you had to get firm D 4 and send with application. Would send link if I could work out how to do it smile

This is the current info regarding licence renewal aged 70 on the gov.uk official site . Nothing has changed. It’s a self assessment with no GP input. That’s not to say it won’t change in the future but for now the situation remains the same.

You’re wrong Dollydaydream. You just need to answer some questions about your fitness to drive. Look on Gov.uk.

My GP will charge at least £35 for the letter and probably more because he would have to test your sight and hearing.

If it is true I think many may well find themselves selling their pride and joy.

I don’t think that is correct.

Has anyone seen the new rules for renewing a driving licence when you're 70?
I've been looking and it would seem that from August 1st you have to get a form from doctor to say that you're ok to drive.
Checks for cognitive awareness, heating and vision
If you pass you're issued with a form to send to DVLA with your application.
I'm wondering how this is going to work ,given that it's difficult to obtain GP appointments.
