Water Bills

I have just received an outrageous bill for £204 from Anglian Water for six months. Is this normal? We never had anything as high as this when living in Sussex.

There are only two of us. Noone takes a bath (showers only); for medical reasons I have to strip wash; washing machine on once a week; dishwasher every other day.

Now, there was a letter in the newspaper several weeks ago, where a householder discovered that if you have a smart water meter but poor mobile reception, inaccurate readings can be sent to the water company. Scary.

Could this also be applicable to other utilities, I wonder?

Has anyone else come across this? Thoughts would be useful.

keepingquiet. The mantra is that if there are fewer occupants than bedrooms - it’s cheaper to have a meter.

I don't have a water meter. I was told it could lead to me paying more.

Eventually, that could well be true.

If you have a lot of people, using a lot of water, and your charges are not high, a meter might change the charges upwards.

Our non-meter charges were nearly £80 pm. When the meter was put in they dropped to just over £10pm. They have crept up since, but are still less than half what we used to pay.

Allira Just talked to DH about this. Definitely ask again…a meter can be situated anywhere on your in pipe, within your boundary.

Thanks JamesandJon33

It's worth a try.

I just moved from Affinity £25 to Anglian they’ve set the bill at £29 we are on a meter but we shall see what it is in a few months as my daughter now lives with me so I expect it to go up.

I live alone. I am on a meter. My water bill is £30 per month.

Gosh that seems a lot Allira! We’re Dwr Cymru, metered and spend approximately £250 pa, billed May and November.

I expect the next bill to be slightly higher than normal as the garden tubs have needed extra refreshment after the glorious summer we’ve had!

We asked for a meter, Pantglas2 but a neighbour's tree roots are obstructing where the meter would go. Perhaps we should ask again. It has just about doubled since they first estimated it.

having just moved from Thames water to Anglian, I was suprised how high our estimated water bill was at our new address. I spoke to Anglian who told me that water bills vary a lot from company company, depending on regional circumstances.

In Thames Water's region it is very highly populated with very large built up areas. This means that the number of customers per mile of water main or sewer, is many more than in Anglian and its large rural area and fewer built up areas where the number ofconsumers per mile of main are fewer.

Allira we are with Welsh Water. Originally they said we couldn’t have a meter as we are quite rural. However we now have one, not on the road or pavement as many are, but just outside the back door.

Allira Sun 07-Sept-25 20:43:07

It's less than ours. We couldn't have a meter so ours is based on what the Water Company estimate two people would use. DH just checked and it is £592 pa.

There has been a 30% rise for 2025/26
"Not-for profit" Welsh Water 🤔

Thames Water. We pay £50 a month and have just had a notification that we owe £370. They have said they will be increasing our monthly payment to £200 a month! We have said we will pay the £372 and they can increase our monthly payment to £112. How do families with young children cope?

Charleygirl5 Sun 07-Sept-25 18:17:28

I am with Affinity Water and I pay £20 a month for metered water. My dishwasher is on every other day, but I appear to wash for the neighbourhood as my washing is on most days at least twice.

I have short showers only and never water anything.

I am very careful and the monthly amount would be less if I did not have a weekly cleaner.

Aldom Sun 07-Sept-25 18:07:54

Water companies increased their charges on 1st April this year by an average of 26%

SORES Sun 07-Sept-25 16:40:28

dalrymple23 I don’t understand your outrage at all, as PaynesGrey points out, this is a not much over a £1 a day -
is this for water in and sewage out, metered.

I’m astonished though to read that your washing machine
is on only once a week.

Cabbie21 Sun 07-Sept-25 13:18:10

We are now all paying extra for the water companies to upgrade their systems - long overdue, but I resent the fact that shareholders have had cushy bonuses for years.
I pay £27 per month, increased from £22.

PaynesGrey Sun 07-Sept-25 13:00:09

It doesn’t sound outrageous to me.

Anglia Water issue a combined bill for fresh water and waste water.

AI says:

In Sussex, your water and sewerage charges can be on one bill or two, depending on the specific companies providing your service. For example, some areas are served by South East Water, which includes both water and sewerage charges in one bill, while others might use SES Water for water and get a separate bill for sewerage from Southern Water.

Were you paying separately for each service before you moved?

I am with Anglia. They switched over to combined billing in summer 2024. I live alone and am a frugal user. My bill is currently £35 pm or £420 per year. I don’t think £1.15 a day for this service is unreasonable at all.

That is quite cheap OP, a valuable resource

Personally I use all the water for my garden from big water butts and my charge was £124, wessex water, one of the most expensive in the uk. Single person. There are 2 of you OP and I make that £102 each. You have a bargain

Mine is £74 a month just the two of us. Yorkshire water.

Wow! That’s almost twice my monthly payment. I feel for you.

We were paying £88 a month. We had a water meter installed …noe £26 a month. Need I say more

Aldom Sat 06-Sept-25 19:29:58

I'm with Thames Water.
My metred water payment has risen from £27 month to £40.
Your bill works out at £34 per month for two of you. I'm on my own.
So I consider your bill to be fair.
I do take on board the fact that water bills are now more expensive than in the recent past. If it's causing you hardship you have my sympathy.
So much has risen in price recently.
It must be difficult for some people to manage.

M0nica Sat 06-Sept-25 19:16:12

Sounds entirely reasonable.

Mel1967 Sat 06-Sept-25 17:11:11

Southern Water £39 per month - 2 people 3 bed house, dishwasher, washing machine, shower, don’t wash the cars, water from shower is used on the garden, don’t use a hose.
