Housework - cleaning rooms unnecessarily

I keep on top of housework but sometimes think I’m creating a rod for my own back. I do a weekly clean of rooms I don’t use very often (study, spare room) and wonder if this is necessary and if a monthly dust/hoover would be enough.
What’s your schedule for rooms you don’t use?

Ziplok Thu 16-Oct-25 15:20:39

I like to vacuum all the rooms in the house each week, whether used much or not, and the reason being that I don’t want an infestation of either moths or carpet beetles. They particularly like edges and harder to reach corners, so for that reason, the vacuum comes out every week, at least (as sometimes some areas need a quick once over to pick up crumbs or bits of fluff at other times). I don’t go through the house all on the same day, however, but stagger it - gone are the days when I could do that.
I don’t consider myself house proud to the point of obsession, but I like my home to be clean and not smell fusty. I don’t consider housework as a waste of time.

We've shedding dogs. Grandchildren, great grandchildren dropping in, most rooms are used daily. Of course we clean often. Cleaning schedule depends- often if lived in by shedders and crumb droppers.

It is said that housework ever killed anyone but I'm not taking any chances. We heard some mentioned the word house work but we didn't like the sound of it one but.

I loathe overcleaned polished to an inch of their life houses where one is afraid to sit down, eat or drink because the owner anxiously hovers around ready to mop up every real or imaginary action that might have soiled the house.

Many years ago we went to stay with my husband's grandmother.
When I went to the toilet I found she had plumped up the scatter cushion on the sofa where I'd been sitting by the time I came back.
She gave us her bed to sleep in, fresh bedding obviously.
We went out for the day and realised on our return that she'd changed our pillowcases while we were out.
I'd been warned she was houseproud but this was something else 🙄

I have pure wool carpet in a room we use maybe twice a year.
I've put a robot vacuum to do there 6 days a week and it just does the carpet in the 2 rooms on that floor. I don't want moths so this seems important.
Otherwise it gets a quick check about every two months when I drag Henry hoover up there to do thee edges!

Watch out for the carpet month's, even with the robot vac. I discovered the larvae right in the edges by the skirting boards, behind the bed. Too late unfortunately for my lovely wool carpet to be saved.

Yes, they like the edges of fitted carpets.
Of course, it was a while before I realised what those grains of rice were doing in the sitting room.

As little as possible, as much as is needed. that is commensurate with the huse looking in good order.

I don’t get invited to houses like that. 😂

Done😊. Tackled it right away. Now going to make an omelet with salad for lunch and then sit down 😮‍💨 and relax.

Glad you got your unexpected job done. I had planned a quick shopping trip yesterday and found my car covered in bird droppings so had to reroute to the car wash.
I think it must be my age as I hate my day being disrupted by unforeseen jobs.

Oh Luckygirl I'm with you 100 percent. Life is far too short. The house is at the bottom of the list. As long as it's reasonably clean and not scruffy to me it's functional and comfortable.

My thoughts exactly!

Cabbie21 Thu 16-Oct-25 12:56:11

This thread and the prospect of my son popping in this afternoon have spurred me on this morning and now the place looks a bit more respectable!

Well, I thought that I had an afternoon if relaxing and reading.
😡😡😡

I was just putting some shopping away, - opened the freezer and the door had not be closed properly😡🤬😡😡😡

Ice up to my eyeballs. So that is what I shall be doing instead of relaxing!

Now and then or if I need them for visitors.

Same.

Luckygirl3 Thu 16-Oct-25 11:03:43

I don't clean the main rooms, let alone those not in use .... life is too short. A kind cleaner comes round once a fortnight and that's the lot.
All of us on here are on borrowed time ... why waste it?

Allira Thu 16-Oct-25 10:59:43

What’s your schedule for rooms you don’t use?

I don't have schedules any more.
Having worked to deadlines, now I'm retired, if I feel like doing something I do it, or if someone's coming I do it, or if the sun shines on some dust I dust it!

merlotgran Thu 16-Oct-25 10:50:39

I use my spare room as a study so I run the hoover over the carpet whenever I’m using it and dust when I can see it needs doing. The spare bed gets changed after someone has used it and these days that’s not very often.

Allira Thu 16-Oct-25 10:45:55

Bathrooms cleaned more regularly, obviously.

I've always cleaned every room daily. That is a hoover and dust. Toilet/bathroom gets hooverd daily. I know it isn't necessary but takes only a few minutes each room to get it clean and tidy and that's how I like it. Sundays full clean of kitchen and bathroom/toilet. Makes me feel better and for me that's important. Also gives me plenty exercise.

😲

Spare bedrooms get a thorough clean, beds changed after someone has been staying then only a quick dust, hoover the bits of carpet that show every month of so until visitors are due again.
The study - where to begin? I try to dust and vacuum regularly but it's a losing battle, there's too much stuff in there!

The rest gets done weekly, obviously the kitchen daily.

Doodledog Thu 16-Oct-25 10:16:20

My spare bedrooms are only cleaned before and after they are used, and the study gets a quick going over when it needs it - I don't like things getting moved about too much in there, and I tend to use it two or three times a week for a couple of hours or so at a time. I don't see the point in cleaning clean rooms for the sake of it. The inside windows are cleaned when all the upstairs ones are done, which depends on when the winter sun isn't glaring too much for the cleaner to see what she's doing.

Cabbie21 Thu 16-Oct-25 08:55:07

Why clean rooms weekly which are not used? Apart from bathrooms, I don’t always clean my used rooms weekly, just a quick buzz round with the Shark and duster when it is obviously needed. And occasionally more thoroughly.

keepingquiet Thu 16-Oct-25 08:32:22

I don't have any spare rooms but if I did I wouldn't clean them.

I have a small house and like to keep up with the chores on a weekly basis but often don't even manage that!
