NI number

Morning all, so I've finally found out why I haven't received letters from DWP.
Apparently.my postcode had been changed. I don't understand how this could happen as my address hadn't changed.
Anyway I'm worried about where these letters went.
Can my NI number be used fraudulently?

Sounds a bit odd have you been receiving all other mail on time. Even if the postcode was wrong the address should be correct

Your postcode can't be changed without an official notification- can it? Your neighbours postcodes should also have changed, so I would check with them.

Having said that my bin day was changed recently and I wasn't told about it...

Your NI number could be used fraudently like anything else I guess...but not on it's own. Other info would also need to be known.

It is odd, all post, bank etc ok
Apparently as post code was wrong didn't link myself and DH together which is why the winter fuel allowance was wrong. Going to call HMRC to check too

Highly unlikely it would be used fraudulently, I imagine the postcode was finger trouble. Glad it’s been sorted.

So glad you've found out what the problem was/is. It's must have been very frustrating and worrying.

I had a company that changed my postcode when I first moved in 5 years ago. Their parcels always had the same error and were wrongly delivered. I came to the conclusion that their software - the type where you click on the first line of your address - was a) old and b) had errors in it. I was very unlikely to have made the same error, just with one company, every time I filled in my address!

I had really forgotten about it and used the same company, who did it again, recently. It seems that although I put the right postcode in, the drop-down software automatically changes it. So, again an assumption on my part, they may not have yet updated that software. I just don't use that company any more but you are not in that position, sadly.

You could ask if the automated address finder is to blame as, if it is, it will go on doing it until the error in it is corrected.

Thanks for your responses. Just phoned HMRC, very helpful. For some reason they had the wrong address too. As I haven't paid income tax for years(,only worked part time) it never noticed.
They share info with DWP.

Our house was renumbered some years ago, and when a company is using a very old address checker - and it is surprising how many do, My number isn't on the list for my post code, and it won't take objections. We are the last house in the road and the number went up and the old systems will not accept it.

I deal with it by not buying from any firm that is so inefficient or cheap skate that it doesn't have an uptodate address checker

So if part of my postcode is wrong will I still get my mail, ? Just wondering. In this case it was totally wrong I believe

DaisyAnneReturns Wed 12-Nov-25 20:41:58

My first bit was the same but the second half was wrong. The address they consistently delivered it to was a nearby road. I assume that it was their postcode.

It's so annoying, I don't know how this can happen. Got to renew my driving licence. Hope it's going to be ok

It really does depend on your postman. We had the same one for years, and he just knew when things were wrong. We had a random number and have a new regular now, so she pays no attention to postcodes

I started getting mail for a similar address 10 miles away, and when the first came, he knocked on the door to check. I did a search and he would put them through my door because I volunteered to repostcode them.

I do wonder though if developers need more imagination - we have no less than 3 estates within 6 miles that are all flowers, and some are the same!

It can be used fraudulently to claim benefits

I worked payroll when people gave us proof of their NINO from previous employer we often found that it was wrong (digits transposed) took for ever for HMRC to unravel payments made by employer to wrong number and therefore "credited" to someone elses account. If you are sure you have the correct NINO you can ask HMRC for a printout of all employments they have on file for you

Several decades ago I bought a house with a postcode that was changed a few years later to a similar code but an extra number had been placed at the end of the first block
Eg SE4 xxx became SE42 xxx
Presumably new housing required extra postcodes to be generated

NI Number can be an invitation to a lot of fraud.

Only disclose when absolutely have to.
