I don't like Baileys - what can I drink?

As we near Christmas lots of people seem to get really excited about drinking Baileys.

I can't stand the stuff.

My tastes are quite boring in that I really only like chilled white, rose or prosseco.

Is there anything a bit more exciting (but not too complicated) that I might like to drink - and to celebrate the season.

What is your favourite drink at this time of year?

Applejuice! But then I do not drink alcahol.......

Love the idea of a Kir Royale made with raspberry liqueur instead of Cassis . Must try that one.
Crémant , which is similiar to Prosecco, is one of my favourite drinks, all year long.
The go-to spirit is Gin.
I can't stand the cream liqueurs either ,especially Baileys.
I agree that Kittylester can always stick with her year-long favourites if none of the suggestions take her fancy.

Marmalade Liqueur, I adore it. But unfortunately have to get it from Snape Maltings, haven't found it anywhere else.

Have you tried Sloe Gin with cloudy lemonade? Delicious for a Xmas drink?

I love Harvey's Bristol Cream buy myself on bottle in December plus my daughter makes kiln are fromthe empty bottle

Whisky (not usually a fan) mixed with ginger wine topped with a bit of lemonade and ice. Tried it about a month ago. Really liked it

I agree. The only decent alcohol free drink I’ve ever found is the Freixenet 0% no-secco which is I think what you’re talking about. I’ve tried gins, ciders and wines but none are any good IMO. I’d rather drink sparkling water, to be honest if I’m not drinking alcohol.

I have not had an alcoholic drink since last March, when I had too much Champagne, fell and broke my hip whilst on holiday in Australia! I now drink alcohol free Prosecco, rose or white. If anyone knows of a really palatable alcohol free wine, white, red or rose, please do let me know, I have tried so many and poured them down the drain, they are all just awful!

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 25-Nov-25 13:37:13

And yes I agree, that for me, Baileys is a sauce for ice cream, not a drink, but many people love it. I have given a home made version as gifts, but it must be refrigerated and consumed swiftly, because of the cream.

CocoPops, Catterygirl, and Lahlah, I can recommend the ready mixed Blood Orange Negroni by Marks and Spencer.
One of my SIL's will be very happy to see this in his Christmas present bag from me

Monzanilla sherry, and calvados every time for after dinner.

I'm really a Campari (and a little soda) person as I like more bitter drinks.
I like Cynar too and Amaro.

Happy to try most drinks once.
Maybe the answer is to ask what the host/pub/ restaurant has that you can try that's a bit different. Tell them what you like and say you want something else for a change?

I think this will work well for you as it doesn't involve buying (maybe expensive) bottles in "just to try".

I hope you find something lush.

Try water with a little slice of lemon! I find it nice and refreshing grin

Dry white port used to be good, and was used instead of sherry in portugal as sherry was an import and cost more. Chill the port and we found it very good

I enjoy drinking white port in the summer, topped up with tonic water, ice, lemon, and a sprig of mint. (I like the Harvey’s one in a white bottle.)

Why does everybody think that women over a certain age like Baileys? I know this is not a representative sample but the answers here just go to show that grans are just as diverse (and sophisticated) as every other sector of the population! I’d like to see someone trying to sit any of you in the corner with a paper hat and a sweet sherry! (Although I would never say no to a Pedro Ximenez at the end of a meal, neat or poured over vanilla ice cream).

Vermouth has become fashionable again and make a change. Mostly not too expensive to buy either I tend to drink white ones in the summer and red ones in the winter, with ice and a slice or lemon, topped up with tonic water - but if you don’t like this and prefer something slightly sweeter, you can top up with lemonade to taste.

There are so many different ones available. Obviously good old Martini but lots more, which all taste subtlety different according to the herbs et cetera that have been used to make them.

Those of you who like to make sloe gin might like to have a go at making your own vermouth as well. Of course, if you don’t want to drink slow gin neat, you can add tonic, lemonade or even Prosecco.

An Italian Negroni for me please. Equal parts Gin, Campari and Martini Rosso , dash of bitters over lots of ice with an orange slice.

There is a winter version of this called a Boulevardier - substitute the gin for whisky. Even better (in my opinion) if the whiskey is a lovely peaty Islay like Laphoig. Just 20 mls of each, with ice and a slice of orange.

I find it easier to say what I don’t like!!
Campari, sweet or cream sherry and Advocaat come to mind.
Most other drinks are welcome, except of course for any beer.

M0nica Tue 25-Nov-25 09:30:46

Sloe or blackberry gin. I have made some every year for over 20 years or more. This year is has had to be bought, as with the house move and moving to a new area, I have yet to locate where blackberries and sloes caan be found.

And, on occasion, I do enjoy a whisky Mac.

Dempie55 Tue 25-Nov-25 00:39:30

Can’t stand Baileys. My winter drinks are dry sherry, port and lemonade, brandy and lemonade or champagne cocktail (sugar cube soaked in Angostura bitters, then add brandy and champagne, but it’s lethal!)

Catterygirl Tue 25-Nov-25 00:13:17

Coco pops. My favourite in a hotel with someone else doing the cooking 🍳.
Otherwise I’m partial to a Prosecco with Aperol.

Would never drink Baileys , so sweet like cough mixture

TwiceAsNice Mon 24-Nov-25 23:09:06

I like sparkling wine on its own or mixed with orange juice or peach puree ( Buck’s Fizz/Bellini, it helps to dilute the alcohol so you don’t get sloshed ! Sometimes I have Bacardi and Diet Coke for a longer drink ( don’t drink much spirits , hate gin and whisky will drink vodka occasionally . A Cosmopolitan is a special occasion treat or an Aperol Spritz.

A pale sherry or a French cider again now and again. I don’t drink a lot maybe once or twice a week but I don’t like drinking the same thing . Try something new

glammagran Mon 24-Nov-25 23:05:50

Really can’t stand Baileys or its cousins. Way too sweet.

I like champagne, cava, cremant, Burgandy white, many reds and a few rosés. Tawny port is quite nice as I find ruby port too sweet these days. My favourite spirit is Armagnac. British Nyetimber is as good as most champagne. A relative gave us a bottle of Louis Roederer champagne for our 40th wedding anniversary and sadly I didn’t rate it at all.

nanna8 Mon 24-Nov-25 22:39:18

Baileys is too sweet for me. I would prefer a nice red wine or a sav blanc or Pinot Grigio.
