Winter coat

I bought a new Berghaus raincoat as the one I had was starting to look very shabby and I can’t seem to engage the bottom zip at all so I rely on the Velcro. I don’t know if there’s just a knack to it.

That should say ‘bottom zip fastener’.

Does anyone on here have a problem with double zips on coats?
Just wondering.

Double zips are a boon- I have a long quilted coat from Regatta and if I forget to undo the bottom zip I feel ‘trussed up’ in it when I sit in the car.
I also undo it when bending down to pick up after the dog 😄

Lands End. Fantastic. Light , warm and machine washable. Inexpensive. so you can have a new one each year.

I have a lovely long black Regatta one that does not look like a sports coat and looks very smart. It has a fur lined hood and is completely waterproof. I also bought it half price in their sale last year.

As I used a mobility scooter to get around, keeping warm is important. On these we are just 'sitting', no walking movement to keep us warm
When I retired from my work in 2011, (just before my 70th birthday), I was given a fifty pounds M&S voucher by some work colleagues. In 2012 I went to the new M&S store in Stratford East London, on my way back one day from the Olympics (I was a Gamesmaker), and, in their sale, saw a lovely, warm, washable black coat for that amount of money.
Remember saying at the time that it going to be last coat I ever purchase. It is very warm, only use it when weather gets really cold each year.
Into washing machine at end of winter and hung away until needed again.
Just got this out again. It looks exactly the same as it did when I purchased it, and works just as well. So grateful that I did buy it, and it brings back so many happy memories for me.

My 2 padded water-proof coats , came from Tesco and my posh red woollen one from TKMaxx - can’t think of the name - it’s upstairs and I can’t be bothered to tread upstairs . All, a good few years old.

My much loved 35 year old Barbour has been hijacked by DGD1 on the grounds that is is cool and fits her better than me.

My smart winter coat is a boiled wool one. Lightweight but warm. Not waterproof of course.

Greciangirl I really like double zips, it means you can take larger steps, bend down or sit in comfort. Just takes a bit of practice.

Last year I bought a beautifully warm yet lightweight duvet coat from Landsend - I was delighted to be able to get a petite size in it. They usually have many different styles on the website.

@greciangirl , pull both zip pulls down to the very bottom. Insert other part into both zip pulls so that it’s into to top pull then down into bottom pull . Pull the top pull up as far as you want it . The purpose of the bottom pull is that you can undo the bottom of the zip so that you have freer movement through your legs to sit down without feeling trapped, eg for getting in and out of the car etc . I hope this makes sense .

I find winter pretty damn depressing so I like a coat that cheers me up. I've got a terrific red one but this year I bought a mad coat that seems entirely made of cream-coloured fluff, from M&S (seemed to be advertised pretty widely and I'd seen it featured in the Times). I think it was £190 or so. I look like a yeti in it but I love it and lots of people have been complimentary about it. Only trouble is, it sheds like a tomcat in a heatwave so a bit of a nuisance if I'm wearing black underneath it.

Just bought a beauty from M&S half price in their sale, bright red and two buttons, knee length, will last a while I think .
I like the dare2be brand as a good warm duvet type of coat for walking.

I bought a navy "parka" type coat from M&S last year, properly waterproof and warm. The fabric is synthetic and reasonably thick, with a quilted lining. They don't do exactly the same one now but this is similar

I've given up on traditional woollen coats now since I had a moth infestation in my old house which destroyed the lovely Max Mara coats which I though would see me out!

I have several down type coats, a jacket and a gilet from Uniqlo, all a few years old but still looking good. My “best” coat which I hardly ever wear, came from Jaeger long before they went bust and Marks took them over. I doubt I’ll be buying any more

I have just bought a long padded coat from Mointain Warehouse.
I like it, but I can’t get to grips with the zip.
It’s one of those double zips.
I’m fumbling around with it and I just can’t do it up.
Can anyone please tell me the purpose of having a double zips?
Also, which one do you zip up first.
Neither option seems to work for me.
If I can’t get to grips with it, I shall have to return it.

Agree, I have one bought 45yrs ago still looks marvellous but was expensive at the time. Wool coat keeps you warm

I gave up on smart winter coats when I retired, last year I bought a waterproof padded coat from the Togg sale. About £100, the same coat over 200 this year. It’s so very warm and will last years

My go to winter coat every year is my wool herring bone coat, I can't remember how old it is, but brilliant quality, i always get compliments on how nice it looks, ive been looking for something to replace it for a few years, but unless you want to pay stupid money for one, the quality on most coat is dier, so I've given up looking, I'm going to keep to my old FRIEND ,reliable, warm and looks lovely along side my red Christmas coat for December

My ex was seconded to Finland in the 80’s, he gave me a cost that served him well, it’s the best goat ever!

I purchased my winter coat from Decathlon they do on line shopping as well it’s waterproof and warm up to minus 20 degrees purchased 10 years ago and looks brand new still sell them
