M & S - not a happy shopper!

In town yesterday and amongst other things I wanted to buy a couple of thermal tops so I thought M & S would be my best place.

Searched everywhere in the women’s section and found nothing……..men’s section had loads but none in women’s. Made my way to a till as that was the only place I could find anyone who might be able to help and the lady just shrugged and said they hadn’t got any women’s thermal wear to her knowledge.

I know they sell them but it seems to be online only. Me being a ‘touchy-feely’ shopper, online clothing is not acceptable. Had it been I’d have ordered from Damart anyway.

I walked across the road to Primark and found exactly what I wanted!

Get your act together M & S! Online shopping is not for everyone and what about those who choose to NOT have a computer or smartphone?!?

I have Marks and Spencer Thermal tops. Mine are a couple of years old and I bought them in store. This was in their Oxford store. There was a full selection of women's Thermal tops at the time and since.
I'm in Shropshire now and I'll look in my nearest Marks and Spencer to see if they have any.

No trouble finding thermal tops in our local M&S. They're in the underwear dept

Freya5 Sun 11-Jan-26 10:09:55

In NE Lincs. No problems at all,in the underwear dept.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 11-Jan-26 10:12:03

In the underwear dept here in Essex and over the river in Kent🤷‍♀️

In fact this year I have spent more in M & S on clothes than I have done the last two or three winters.

Astitchintime Sun 11-Jan-26 10:12:36

This is very puzzling……why would some stores stock them and not others! Freya5, I did look in the underwear department and no sign of them.

Plenty of thermal tops and leggings in larger M and S stores.
I agree finding an assistant on the floor to help you find them is becoming increasingly difficult.

That’s how shop lifters are having a field day: no staff on the floor.

The best and prettiest of thermal vest tops among other items are Damart. You can order online.

I agree that M&S concentrate too much on on-line shopping and it is to their detriment.

Thankfully you cans till go into some stores- Next is becoming my go-to shop, the staff there are always very helpful.

I bought some excellent thermal tops from Primark. £12. Wash well, they do low neck and high neck tops black and white depending on what top you are wearing. I wear the pointelle pattern ones long enough to tuck in to trousers /skirts keeping me nice and cosy. I do like everything tucked in. !!!

They have a good range in our local medium sized M&S store but are hard to find. They are on a display at the back of the underwear section, against the wall and are packaged in cardboard so not immediately recognisable. I went into the underwear fitting room and asked the assistant there - she had good knowledge of that area of the shop. If you do end up buying online be aware that they come up small - I had to size up.

I was in a large branch of Next in December. I was looking for a specific item and I wandered the entire ground floor and didn’t find a single member of staff to ask .

I went upstairs and saw 5 of them darting around like headless chickens dealing with collections of online orders. The customer login touchscreen had frozen and they were working their way along the queue asking for customer details to search for the orders in the store room. I gave up and left and it did occur to me as I exited via the staff free ground floor that it was a shop lifter’s paradise.

But I don’t want to order online…..I want to look and feel at what I’m buying, that’s my point up thread.

I just bought some in Sainsburys. Seem good value.

I bought one in black with a high collar before Christmas in Asda (George) for £10 and it's really cosy plus it doen't look like a thermal item!

Ashcombe Sun 11-Jan-26 11:24:26

doen't = doesn't

Damart is a long established Yorkshire firm that first specialised in thermals but now does a whole range of women’s clothing and a few mens as well.
Their thermals are really excellent and you can either order online or request brochures and then order by post with a cheque or by phone.

Oreo I found them before Christmas they were literally the only place I could find V neck thermals and when my youngest asked me what I want for Christmas I sent a screenshot shot over and two lovely ones landed a couple of days after
A black one and a flesh coloured one and they are very very warm although a really thin fine material I have one on as we speak
Janejudge Damart is a very well established on line or ‘catalogue through the post’ store I used to look at is as more for older folk but they do have some nice jumpers and lots of other stuff and I suppose I am older I did have a couple of nice jumpers and they haven’t bobbled as much as Mand S do

I’m surprised you’ve never heard of them! If you google Damart you’ll easily find them.

Damart is French though operates multinationally, manufacturing in Tunisia, China etc.

😁

Well, it was a catalogue selling by post and had a name for sensible warm clothing for ladies of a certain age (my MIL was a keen customer).
However, I've commented a couple of times on rather nice sweaters a friend has been wearing and she whispered "they're from Damart".
The thermal vests are good.

M&S clothes are made overseas, probably in the same factories.

I haven’t heard this about France, but their HQ is in Bingley, in West Yorkshire.
