That’s money well spent, my mum used to say.

In terms of improving your happiness/ enjoyment/ mental well-being/ quality of life what have you spent money on to best effect?

Holidays, mostly, but sometimes just a small amount of money spent can make a difference.
Last year I bought a lovely coat in the sales for £40.
Or my airfryer, which cost about £45.

My cat is on offer for adoption, she has found a never ending source of mice.
We have had one a day, some dead some still alive for about 10 days now.
She has to go.😉

Eh? This is rather like people who get a dog and then decide it doesn't match the colour of the curtains, so the poor thing just HAS to go.

And yes, I know someone who did exactly this. She was a former classmate of mine from way back and moved into the corner bungalow at the end of my street. With a lovely Golden Labrador. Which soon vanished. When new carpets were installed.

She was fairly blasè about the dog and the carpet simply not matching.

(She was a bitch-snob in our schooldays and, obviously, nothing had changed.)

Takes all sorts..........

Joke alert.

Anyway, cat safely rehomed with me and my DH has gone to live with Usedtobeblonde.

Air source heat pump for the conservatory. Warm in winter and cool in summer. Splendid

Jakjaxy, where did you get those specs for £ 200? I paid £600 for mine.

Cabbie and Oreo I too might nominate a coat- a warm mountain jacket ! I saw it in a discount store, knew what it was ( I used to climb) where it was about a quarter of the normal price. I feel the cold in a way my family do not, so having a light weight warm jacket I can throw on in freezing conditions( or carry with me - it squashes up small) or if we run out of our heating fuel ( it has to be delivered which can be impossible in freezing weather) stops me worrying!
I’m sure I’ll think of other buys.

My dog, for sure. And my concert tickets - nothing like being at a live music gig with thousands of other fans all belting out the songs!

NotSpaghetti Wed 15-Apr-26 10:51:31

Oh yes.
I love Ocado!

My tortoise, bought in 1962 for 2/6d. Still with me and provides me with endless pleasure!

The pots in the garden, full of stunning tulips. My dog, although not my favourite last night, who brightens my life no end. Most of the time 🙄.

The money I spent on making my allotment suitable for me becoming older. The beds are dedicated and distinct and will last a lifetime, the paths are wide and covered in a thick layer of landscape bark. I have storage and have brought my shed back from the dead and placed slip-proof grating all around the storage and shed areas

It is a bolt hole and a very good place to meet people and to get exercise

Now it has become cheap to run, only £40 a year for the half plot

Ocado food deliveries,

Books.

Good seats at the theatre.

My hair system. It has transformed my life.

Recently, the tweed jacket I splurged on while on a visit to York the year before last. Made of cloth dyed and woven in a Yorkshire Mill from Yorkshire wool, and beautifully tailored. was. I don’t get excited about much but I had been looking for one for what seemed like a lifetime and there it was. I love wearing it so don’t begrudge the cost which was probably more than I would spend on clothes in a year. And under the collar…..

I love finding an old AA Town and Countryside Guide, the older the better. The little snippets of info, beautiful nostalgic photography and the jaunty style of writing are just my cup of tea.
Many happy hours pouring over our beautiul countryside, all for a couple of pounds!
Oh, and the silver birch that I planted in just the right spotsunshine

Being able to afford to keeping my car going.
Being able to pay for a cleaner and a gardener and my gym membership. enough heating

Not much left for holidays, but then I'm quite a home bird.

Oreo Tue 14-Apr-26 22:49:47

🤔 A few medical procedures that both I and DP had to go down the private route for.
My puffa jacket over Winter.
Music lessons for my girls when they were young, the enjoyment factor alone for them was worth it.
Our log burner.
My suede heeled boots.

I'd adopt her but DH would leave home.

Actually, send me a photo of her and I'll compare the two 😂

Getting my crooked front teeth sorted. I can smile with confidence now 😁

dragonfly46 Tue 14-Apr-26 22:19:43

My robot mower at this time of year.
Also the new bannisters they have really brightened up the hallway.

Deedaa Tue 14-Apr-26 22:15:02

My late husband did a lot of things, many of which I removed as soon as I could after he died ( The massive metal shed that looked hideous and ran with condensation springs to mind) One thing that I couldn't fault was replacing our sliding patio doors with French windows. I love having them wide open in the summer. It really feels like bringing the garden indoors.

Georgesgran Tue 14-Apr-26 22:10:54

A German sports car! I was younger then, although I still have a (much more boring) convertible.
Maybe I’m shallow, but it did give my confidence a much needed boost.

I suppose holidays are my big spend now. DH hated holidays, so, whilst I'm able, I’m trying to make up for lost time.

NotSpaghetti Tue 14-Apr-26 22:04:00

Beautiful (to me) tiles, super duper kettle, really lovely old mirror, my amelanchier this time of year... some lovely (bargain) curtains...
I actually buy relatively little - but the things I do buy tend to be really considered.
I tend to keep them till they are actually worn out.

Lots of "stuff" that was "money well spent" still makes me happy years later.

Last year we went with almost all the family on a week long beach holiday.
That was certainly "money well spent".

Usedtobeblonde Tue 14-Apr-26 22:03:51

I love my cat to bits, she is my best ever Christmas present.
I just wish she would listen when I tell her NO MORE MICE THANK YOU

Jaxjacky Tue 14-Apr-26 21:54:21

My glasses, I’m very short sighted, varifocal, thinned lenses, photochromic and very light, less than £250, brilliant how technology moves on.
