That’s money well spent, my mum used to say.

In terms of improving your happiness/ enjoyment/ mental well-being/ quality of life what have you spent money on to best effect?

Holidays, mostly, but sometimes just a small amount of money spent can make a difference.
Last year I bought a lovely coat in the sales for £40.
Or my airfryer, which cost about £45.

Our automatic car. My husband has gone through one hip and two knee replacements and couldn’t cope with a manual transmission car and I have had occasional mobility difficulties. As rural dwellers with little access to public transport our car is extremely important to us.

Our trip to Canada to see a very old friend in one part, then exploring, then flying across to the other side to see much loved and missed family.

Excuse my ignorance but what is a Thermomix?

It’s magic, it does everything!

The best thing I have ever bought.

Here’s a link;

A stairlift. I don’t need to use it all the time but it helps so much on my bad days.

Bi-fold doors across the back of our house, which faces south. When we moved in 6 years ago we intended to have a conservatory installed as we had loved the one at our previous house (also south facing) but so glad we decided on bi-folds, loads of light and warmth streaming in and house and garden blending together in the summer months.

Laser eye surgery.

I was very short sighted, hated wearing glasses, wore contact lenses for 28 years, which was a faff 🙄.

After 20 years it still feels like a miracle that I have 20/20 vision. Money very well spent.

A lovely Oak gazebo we had erected in the garden. The garden furniture can stay out uncovered all summer. We get to enjoy it without wondering if we should cover it in case it rains. The two cats love it as they have a comfortable outdoor space to sleep, but we are forever brushing their hair off the cushions!

Deciding to have 2 ovens when planning our new kitchen (10 years ago). With our expanding family, trying to feed them all when hosting family get-togethers was becoming increasingly difficult. Luckily we got a really good deal on 2 Neff slide and hide ovens and they have made catering for my gang so much easier.

Best examples of money well spent in recent years have been: 1) when I had a shabby old conservatory demolished and my tiny, cramped and impractical 1960s kitchen extended into a huge and colourful kitchen/diner/sitting area.
2) my new Barker & Finch divan bed. Sleep has never felt so good!

Actually since I have been travelling on my own, when I visit my D who lives near the South coast I also travel first class from Stockport to Euston.
It is so comfortable and I am looked after.
When I get to London my D meets me and we get a taxi across London as I can’t use the tube and then another train down to W Sussex.
With a senior Railcard it is still expensive but well worth the cost.
Money well spent to me.

Upgrade to first class on a very crowded train from Edinburgh to Kings Cross.

My dishwasher. A friend said “But why for just one person?”
“I’d have it for half a person” I said😁
Actually with regular family visits it’s worth it.

Absolutely agree!

my lovely dogs, all now gone

I was recently able to give my neice/God daughter some money to enable her to increase the deposit she paid on a new car, enabling her to get a bigger model more suited to her needs since her family, who live up north, is expanding and she travels every weekend to spend time with her new grand daughter. The relief on her mum and dad’s faces to know she now has more reliable, safer transport was simply priceless! Money very well spent.

My all singing all dancing bed. When i downsized here 3 years ago, my beds didn’t fit into the smaller bedrooms so, looking far into the future (or so I thought) I decided to invest in a double electric bed. It wasn’t cheap. However 1 year later, it came into its own after I had unexpected heart surgery and found it excruciating to sit up in bed unaided. One press of the button and up I went. Also the swollen leg where the vein was harvested could be raised at the press of another button. I rarely use it now but know the facilities are there should they be required

£600 nearly 20 years ago for a scan which discovered a pancreatic tumour.

The donation I gave to the dog rescue charity for our rescue girl. She gets me get up in the morning, makes me laugh, makes me take exercise and when she is with me people tend to talk to me which is an added bonus.

We feel the same about our dog, we had him as a puppy and he is 13 in October, he is a reason to get up in the morning and get out of the house every day for a walk in the park close to our house, rain or shine he loves his walks. I have made lots of casual acquaintances and two really good friends thanks to him, the best £500 we ever spent.
