Strip Washing

Good morning,

We are having our bathroom replaced at the moment.
It’s our only bathroom.
Luckily have a separate toilet.
We’re having to strip wash, at the kitchen sink.
It got me thinking is there anyone out there who strip washes, rather than having a bath or a shower or maybe to save water? 🫧🛀🚿

What soap do you use for a strip wash? Shower gel? Soap bar?

Bar soap, at the moment a particularly nice, creamy one I was given, hand made by the Oxford Soap company.

Wash your face, your Fanny and your feet and give your under arms a treat.

My mother’s wise words coping with four daughters who always wanted to use the scullery to get ready to go courting, having no bathroom or hot water on tap, so boiling a kettle was always necessary.

As I’m disabled now and unable to have a bath or shower my carers use the wet sheets which are perfect but I remember the old days when a quick wipe with a flannel was all that was available.

I agree in principle . In addition when skin overlaps with skin like under the breasts or under the belly I think it's best quite often to wash and dry to avoid infection.

I also use these wipes, they’re great, though I do try and shower every day

BlueBelle

Me too BrownCow I just couldn’t go without a daily morning shower, I don’t sweat even when I do heavy manual work, or in very hot weather I ve never sweated even when I lived in the tropics …but I do like my shower

Bluebelle,
A daily shower is also a must for me & I even love a shower before bed especially when the bed has clean linens .

I have used the shower cap shampoos for a friend in hospital - they are excellent. They can be warmed in a microwave, but are refreshing to use cold. Massage all over the cap, leave for a few minutes, towel dry, and your hair is fresh, soft and clean.

I can’t imagine not having a shower 🚿 every day , we had an over the bath shower for donkeys years then during lockdown we replaced it with a walk in shower plus we are lucky have a downstairs shower room .
Though a relation of mine has been without a shower or bathing facilities since before Christmas!
They live in a local authority rented property & it seems like it’s not on the list as an urgent fix !
Same relation recently while on holiday would quite often announce that “ I’ve had a strip wash, can’t be bothered with a shower “
That I can’t fathom as a shower can take as long or short a time as you could wish 2mons or 20mins !!

I do. I don't have a shower every day, so alternate them with a strip wash. It's how I was brought up as we didn't have much hot water. So I enjoy a wash basin full of hot soapy water and a sponge or flannel. And it saves water . No problem.

Same here, I like a strip wash between times and use to cock my leg over the sink, which I can’t do now😁
I was shocked to read that many Americans shower twice a day,
that is certainly too clean for me!

My sister (who would tell me the truth) said I’m not a “smelly person”, so it must be working 🤞

TheSunRisesInTheEast Thu 23-Apr-26 21:02:33

I'm just picturing you cocking your leg over the sink!! You must be tall, I'm only 5'2" and wouldn't have been able to do that even in my younger years 😂.

I'm 5 ft 1, and used to put my feet in the sink to wash them .
Wonder if I can still do that....

I’m 5’ and can still do it.

There's a wonderful picture in the family album: back view of my late sister, aged about 4, standing naked on a chair with one foot in the basin (whilst we were on a seaside holiday) - wouldn't dream of sharing it though, as it's a bit 'too' candid for public consumption!

I have a Saturday night bath and a hair wash on Sunday morning, occasionally a hair wash mid week. Every morning I have a good strip wash using the minimum of soap. The DDs would have told me, I'm sure, if I smelt.

Colls

What a fabulous thread. I thought I was probably the only one who still did this. I would like to shower or bath more often but physically could not manage it. So wipes and bowls of soapy water it is for now. I also time them according to my (very limited) social calendar!
Suspect. as many have said we are too clean now - but that's being duped by advertising of all these perfumed things we are supposed to buy. YUK!
Even as a teenager I felt deoderants / well, anti-perspirants were not great. We are supposed to perspire and I don't think they are good for us.
So thank you OP for a really interesting and reassuring thread.
PS. Not used it yet but I bought a child's garden pool to catch any excess water whilst I am 'at the sink'. grin

Goodness, I have to disagree as regards deodorants! One of my abiding memories of the dreaded school PE changing rooms, is the girls who so very obviously didn’t use any!

(This was in the 60s, when deodorants were readily available.)

butterandjam - please don't attempt it unless someone's there to catch you 😂. I have short legs 🤣.

I hate shower gel and always use bar soap, French olive oil soap with aloe vera.

MissAdventure Sun 03-May-26 11:49:55

Oh i love a good strup washing thread.
I strip wash, with a bar of soap.

MissAdventure Sun 03-May-26 11:54:33

Strup. Strip...

Rosie51 Sun 03-May-26 14:00:02

Lovely to see you back MissAdventure I think a strup wash sounds much more interesting grin

MissAdventure Sun 03-May-26 16:51:55

Thank you.
If my sister texts me, she says she finds it more interesting if I leave my replies "as is".

You can never have too clean
a strup - thats my motto.

We had no bathroom when I was a child. No indoor loo either, we had one of the really old outdoor ones with a wooden seat like a table with a hole in. It did have a ‘pull the chain’ cistern though, and a proper plumbed sewer. The path to it went past next door’s pig sty - many of the houses kept pigs and chickens as well as having extensive vegetable gardens. At home we used to strip wash in the kitchen, or go to my grandma's, who did have a bath but with a rather scary gas geyser over it. Now I have a couple of showers and a hair wash a week and the rest of the time I strip wash at the sink unless I’ve been doing sweaty exercise. Getting my foot in the basin is part of my keep fit regime!

butterandjam - congratulations on your suppleness, I'm impressed! 😉

Oh gosh it brought back memories of when my mum used to say her and her sister used to have to have a strip wash when they were growing up.
A two bedroomed terraced.

9 children (2 girls 7 boys)

All the boys would be sent out to the park whilst the girls had their "strip wash" with just a cold tap in the kitchen.

How lucky we are today. Bless you mum.
Also the weekly tin bath.

Sorry got diverted a little.hmm

bikergran Mon 04-May-26 10:20:27

Flibberty99 lol sound like the same era . Makes me shiver just thinking about it.

Even all her life my mum would always wash her face in cold water.
