I’m doing a presentation on the 1960s and thought I’d start it off with a typical piece of music.
As the talk is of life in England - our experiences and recollections, I’d like to be a British group or singer.
Thank you

California Dreamin and San Francisco by Mamas and Papas.

The 60s for me were Mods and Rockers, Mary Quant, Vidal Sassoon and The Beatles. So anything by The Beatles would be my choice.

I’ve just thought of another one, this is my ultimate pop song, the Temptations, the lyrics are pure gold and the joy just shines out of them as they are singing -Fe,fi,fo,fum look out baby cos here I come.

I guess any teenager will think that their era had the best music, but we definitely did! I love all the songs suggested and probably know every word to all of them even if I don’t know what I was doing yesterday. Interestingly our four grandchildren who range from thirteen to twenty love their era of music, mostly rapping, dreadful! but also love sixties music although they probably wouldn’t admit it to their friends. Without a shadow of doubt the sixties will remain the best decade of music as history will show.

Pictures of Matchstick Men - Status Quo! Still my favourite band with my all time hero Francis Rossi! Took a couple of months fighting the grotty old man who owned our local record shop to get it for me! Finally he did & I still have it!

.

Before my time but I know just about all the recommendations because they're always played at weddings and parties.
Guaranteed to get everyone up and dancing.

(A popular local DJ told me recently that he gets really fed up with people giving him a music list that is just boom-boom-boom. No-one gets up to dance. But as soon as he puts on 'Staying Alive' (Beegees) or 'Dancing Queen' (ABBA) the floor is packed with everyone from Granny to Grandchild)

Not 100 pc; it is the 1960s, but may I share with you all a precious memory?
I was waiting at the bus stop with Mum; I was aged about 3 years. Getting bored, I yelled at Mum, "Sing Rockapella, Mum!"
the song was actually Cinderella Rockefeller by Esther and Abi
The other was If You Go to San Francisco. Dad used to sing it to me to get me to sleep. Even though it is nearly 20 years since I lost my dad, I still cannot listen to the song without tears.
Lastly, The Walker Brothers' No Regrets. Dad loved it, and I can remember it playing on the battered old radio—no built-in ones in those days. We were going to the dairy to get cream for Mum's delicious homemade fresh cream horns. I can remember him singing along.
Oh dear, one more. My cousin saved up her pocket money to buy a Blackberry Way, and while she babysat me, she brought it along to play on Dad's radiogram. Before she could, I spilled my hot milk all over it! I think dad bought her a new copy

Yes! Reading your responses brought back happy memories. I'd like to add Engelbert Humperdinck (Release Me and The Last Waltz) and Tom Jones (You're My World, It's Not Unusual and I Who Have Nothing)

Why are there still so many American tracks being given a mention? All great - but not British!
I also think The Who's 'My Generation' is perfect for the occasion.
But if not, what about Gerry and the Pacemakers ' Ferry Cross the Mersey'?

Music from the north of Britain really arrived in the 60's - the Beatles of course - but they weren't the only ones.
This decade brought a definite challenge - if not a move away - from the previously London-centric pop scene.

Ha ha said the clown the Yardbirds. It reminds me of her going to the long counter in a record shop, there was a step leading up to it and she slightly lost her balance and did a sort of curtsey, stood up and said can I have Ha ha said the clown!

Oh my gosh. Just relived my teenage years singing every song as I read them. Not a bad choice amongst them. I was 10 in 1961 with an older brother who loved music too. So, the whole of the 60's were filled with the music I still love. casdon can never sit if I hear Get Ready!

Plevey08 Mon 18-May-26 17:56:35

Loved The Animals, House of the Rising Sun. Decades later I realised they were singing about a whore house.
