Lovely to find this site.
I started looking after my 1 year grandchild in Sept after her mummy went back to work. I dropped two days from full time working to look after him two consecutive days.
TBH I'm absolutely exhausted. I forgot how hard it is to keep a small one entertained all day. On top of this I have their dog as well as she can't be left alone at home.
This is making twice as hard to get out anywhere, firstly it's a military operation getting them both into the car, prams, car seats etc...secondly trying to find somewhere to go with both of them is so hard and its mainly outdoor.
I have asked my daughter if she can find some kind of care for the dog one of the days which frees me up for toddler groups etc.
It was my choice and offer to have them both but I seriously didn't envisage it being so hard. They are not in a position to put her into nursery anymore days than she is.
Any ideas please

I fully understand why the dog can't be left alone all day, but is there a particular reason why it can't be left alone for shorter periods while you go to things like toddler groups?

If not, I think your daughter is asking far too much of you.

Have you spoken to mummy about daily routine at home?
I was in childcare for many years and found having a good routine helpful and as you mentioned getting out when possible.
Could you pop her in pram and go for walk with the dog each day?
Is there a park nearby? Although dog probably wont be allowed in.
Basic craft activities are always fun.

Tell your daughter you have bitten off more than you can chew !
Hard I know but- their child and dog- their responsibility- not yours!!!
A change has to come so that you are not completely overwhelmed. I offered one day a week for my GC. I love them dearly but one day each week was enough. As for their dog šŸ•!? Don't get me started on that !!
You offer childcare on your terms not theirs. The only idea I can offer is that you have a frank discussion with your daughter- if you don't tell her how you feel she wont know. Your story is very familiar and I have strong views about GPs doing childcare. If your daughter is unable to negotiate with you then she needs to drop her feeling of entitlement and find alternative care for her child and her dog - good luck and stand your ground . Its not your job to look after her child or her dog!

I’d suggest your daughter finds daycare for the dog, it’s much less expensive than paying for childcare, and the dog will be happy to be in somebody else’s home. Quite a few people offer this. The other thing you might want to consider is splitting your childcare days, so they aren’t consecutive? I look after my GD one day a week, and if I had to do a second day I’d opt for that to give me time to recover from the whirl wind.

Do not feel guilty because you offered to have the child and the dog . Adult children forget their parents are growing older and still view them as
' good old Mum and Dad' I hope a compromise that works for you and your DD can be reached. Good luck and remember child and dog are most definitely not your responsibility!!!!

I looked after my young grandsons for two weeks in the daytime 16 years ago when my daughter was moving house. I couldn’t’ve done it without my partners help. I took two weeks off work to do it. I then did various stints while I was still working part time. It exhausted me. Yesterday I went to my son’s house to look after his two for the day. Thankfully they’re quite responsible and amused themselves ( the oldest is 11) because I dozed off on the sofa for most of the day. I don’t think our children can understand what it’s like to get older.
