I really liked The Beach House by James Paterson and Madame Serpent by Jean Plaidy.
I was recently given The Good Earth by Pearl Buck. It was fascinating. All about just how hard it was being a female if you were brought up in the country, and if you were allowed to survive - in the 1900s Women had no status whatsoever, other than for making male babies. Tho as the story progressed you felt sorry for the husband too, neither had been educated and it was just a fight for survival. Maybe not holiday reading :-)
