I have just started reading 'The Secret Life of Bees' by Sue Monk Kidd. One of the reviews 'Wonderfully written, powerful, poignant and humerous'. Well I shall find out, I am on page 26 at the moment, and is very easy to read.

I've read all the Harry Bosch too and I've read other Michael Connelly books too and they are all good.

Annobel Mon 03-Oct-11 21:55:33

Love the Harry Bosch books too. As a character he ranks with John Rebus and Harry Hole!

I don`t think you`ll regret it Annobel. I`ve just finished one of Michael Connelly`s earlier Harry Bosch stories, The Black Ice, about to start on the one that followed it, City of Bones, I like the Harry Bosch books.

I haven't read any of Lee Child's books but as this thread recommended Jo Nesbo, I'm inclined to go with this recommendation as well. I'm a sucker for a good thriller.

I meant the Lee Childs books in last post! Annobel, I agree, a lot of my friends who swore they'd never succumb, have done so, either with iPad or Kindle. It's all so convenient, and isn't it frighteningly quick to buy books?

Ariadne Mon 03-Oct-11 16:51:29

My OG loves these. There's a prequel just out.

I have read the reviews for the Kindle Fire tablet and see one big drawback in comparison with the I-pad and some other tablets: there is no camera which makes it impossible to use Skype. I am very happy with my Kindle and am already using it most of the time in preference to books: I feel such a traitor!

Just checked and the new cheaper (£89) lighter smaller Kindle has no keyboard.

The colour touch screen Kindle Fire (199 dollars, shipping from Nov 15) is reviewed on popherald.com/news/amazon-kindle-fire-android-tablet-release-date-price-tag-revealed/11414

They also seem to be launching another version thenextweb.com/mobile/2011/09/28/amazon-announces-kindle-touch-ebook-reader-for-99/

I'm confused.

Elegran Mon 03-Oct-11 15:48:00

Typical ! Just after I bought one.

They also have an all-singing-all-dancing touch-screen colour Kindle-ish thingy too.

yogagran Sun 02-Oct-11 22:52:48

I see that Amazon have introduced a new Kindle with a lower price of £89 smile

I am reading the The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society. It is a book about how it was for the residents of Guernsey during the 2nd world war. I found it hard to get in to, and a little confusing at first, as there were so many people involved, however I am pleased to say I stuck with it and am thoroughly enjoying it now. It is very well written and enlightening. Apparently the Duchess of Cambridge read it on her holiday so I am in good company!!!

Have you heard they are panning a film of the Jack Reacher books starring Tom Cruse, can you imagine ......I wonder what the author thinks, Reacher is supposed to be 6 ft 7 not 5 ft 7!!

Just finished reading 'Into the darkest corner' by Elizabeth Haynes a gripping psychological thriller. A really good book, I didn't want it to finish.

Just started reading my copy of 'The Brave' by Nicholas Evans. Looking forward to reading it, but it's the first 'real' book I've read since having my Kindle twelve months ago and I'm really missing it sad.

Just finished Lemon Sherbet and Dolly blue by Lynn Knight. A heartwarming story about three very different types of adoption by three generations of one family set within the historical background of women' lives during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A reminder of how difficult it was for our grandmothers and great grandmothers but interwoven by 'a family cobbled together by love'.

You`re very welcome.

jinglejangle Sat 01-Oct-11 22:41:44

Yes, it was you numberplease. I remember now. Thank you. smile

numberplease Sat 01-Oct-11 17:44:19

May have been me, but not sure. I love them, in fact, I`m in love with Jack Reacher!

jinglejangle Sat 01-Oct-11 09:03:53

Whoever recommended the Lee Childs "Jack Reacher" books on this thread - a big THANK YOU. They are great. Just started number one, and there are loads of 'em. Hooray!

Sorry I don't remember who the poster was.

Annobel Fri 30-Sept-11 23:04:07

Yes - I read them all on holiday this summer. Good reading!

jinglejangle Fri 30-Sept-11 22:45:41

Annobel - am I remembering rightly? Is it you who likes King Arthur books? Have you read the Bernard Cornwell ones?

jinglejangle Fri 30-Sept-11 22:43:50

Bernard Cornwell's new book is out at last! Death of Kings. The last one in the Uhtred series. Its gonna be sad, and fantastic!

And its waiting for me on my kindle because I pre-ordered it. smile

I love a good hero and they don't come better than Uhtred!

Watermelons by James Delingpole — a political book, well written. Before anyone slams me as a right wing ... um ... 'buzzard', I've also read books by "the other side", such as James Lovelock, Stephan Harding and R.Bruce Hull. I like to get the balanced view by comparing notes.

MDougall Thu 29-Sept-11 17:21:40

Have just finished reading Sarah Waters "Affinity" - a spooky but very enjoyable read about a disgraced spiritualist who weaves an enigmatic spell on her Lady visitor in prison - set in Victorian times. This is another excellent Sarah Waters book - try "Fingersmith" and "Tipping the Velvet" plus "The Night Watch" (recently dramatised on TV). She is an excellent story teller.

I love Jo Nesbo`s books, have read all the English translated ones, waiting for the next one, very impatiently!

Annobel Wed 28-Sept-11 22:05:05

Joe Nesbo's The Redeemer. Full of twists though I think I am beginning to see the light!
