I have just started reading 'The Secret Life of Bees' by Sue Monk Kidd. One of the reviews 'Wonderfully written, powerful, poignant and humerous'. Well I shall find out, I am on page 26 at the moment, and is very easy to read.

I've just seen the film of Round Ireland with a Fridge, and found it pretty disappointing. Wondered if anyone had read the book, which was supposed to be quite good.

Annobel Wed 27-Jul-11 22:39:51

OK JessM, I expect it will be repeated sooner rather than later. I will look out for it. I read Round Ireland with a Fridge a long time ago and enjoyed it. As far as I remember it was very funny.

JessM Thu 28-Jul-11 16:16:38

I think i heard a bit on the radio maybe...
Reminds me of an overheard conversation a couple of months ago. Bunch of women, having a coffee after their aquarobics class:
"X ran the London marathon dressed in a washing machine - of course he took the concrete block out." hmm

crimson Thu 28-Jul-11 16:34:56

Thanks; I'll give it a go [the book, not running a marathon.....].

James Patterson`s Cross Fire was as brilliant as I expected it to be, plenty of murders, not for gentle souls like greenmossgiel! I`m now reading Miracle Cure, by Harlen Coben, apparently it`s one of his earlier books republished.

Just starting Atlantic: a vast ocean of a million stories by Simon Winchester. I've enjoyed other books by him and don't seem to be able to 'get into' fiction much at the mo.

I've just finished What The Dead Know by Laura Lippman. Its the story of 2 young sisters who went missing and what happens when a woman turns up 30 years later claiming to be one of the missing girls. One of those books that you read quickly because you need to know what happens next!

Hattie64 thanx for this thread ...fantastic ...lots of ideas for future reads. You might like to try Yrsa Sigurdardottir ...another Icelandic author ...and then there is Anne Holt ...a Norwegian crime writer.

I really enjoy reading Scandinavian writers ...so well done Steig Larsson for enabling more authors to be translated into English ...love reading books set in places I have visited... written by the 'locals'!!

Katesmate ...yes I've read the Henning Mankell books ...enjoy them ...but I also enjoy the Sweddish tv series ...but be warned... latter has different additional charaters to those found in the books

Does anyone know the name of the book and author of the recent Danish crime serial shown on tv?

Does anyone know of a good Finnish crime writer?

Miracle Cure, by Harlan Coben, was really rather good. It`s one of his earlier offerings, from 1991, and not a bit like his more recent books. I`ve just started on The Leopard, by Jo Nesbo, I`ve been waiting quite a while for it to go paperback, and no doubt it`ll be as brilliant as the other 5 of his books that I`ve read.

Just finished reading Never Look Away' by Linwood Barclay, it was brilliant, a real page turner, I even starting reading it in the middle of the night when I woke up because I wanted to know what was going to happen next!

Just downloaded 'No time for goodbye' also by Linwood Barclay on my Kindle to read next but I've also got 'Room' on there which has been there for some time now so I feel I should read it especially as its book of the month. Maybe I need to pace myself as Linwood Barclay hasn't written that many books and I should save them for a treatsmile

nanamo Tue 02-Aug-11 17:09:04

If you enjoy the tudor period and a good mystery try the shardlake series.
There are five at the moment but the beauty is you can read them in any order each one is a complete story but with Shardlake as the central character. The latest one is Heartstone, author C.J.Sansom 626 pages long.

Nanamo, I agree, I love the Shardlake stories, and they give a great insight into life in the 16th century.

JessM Tue 02-Aug-11 18:26:25

OOh - I did enjoy the Shardlake's I have read so far. Maybe i will get another one to read in Ireland.

I am reading 'Three Stations' by Martin Cruz Smith. This is the seventh book in the Arkady Renko series of books. The first being Gorky Park. I have thoroughly enjoyed all his books in this series, set in Russia, but I am not to sure about this one, I am on page 70, so perhaps it will improve for me.

numberplease Tue 02-Aug-11 21:47:32

Hattie, Gorky Park is a book that I always said I was going to read, but never have, maybe it`s time to rectify that.

curlynana Wed 03-Aug-11 22:15:12

Has anybody read the Agatha Raisin series by MC Beaton? They're a bit like Midsommer Murders ( you wouldn't want to live there!!) but they're easy reading and I find very enjoyable.

Liz08 Fri 05-Aug-11 19:27:45

This thread is Great!
I've exhausted most of my favourite authors so have now checked out some of the ones mentioned here and reserved some of them at the library (free for pensioners) and ordered a couple off Amazon. I find that the reviews on Amazon are a good pointer for me usually if you know the titles to look for.
More suggestions please. I'm a Michael Connelly/John Grisham/Sue Grafton sort of Gal.

numberplease Fri 05-Aug-11 21:39:52

Not keen on John Grisham, Liz08, but do like Michael Connelly and Sue Grafton. I`ve read every one of her alphabetical Kinsey Millhone books, what on earth will happen when she gets to Z? I`m still reading Jo Nesbo`s The Leopard, just past the halfway mark, but there are 740 pages in this one! My only problem with the Swedish and Norwegian writers is wondering how to pronounce things.

Zephrine Fri 05-Aug-11 22:02:57

Have you tried Kathy Reichs?

Jacey Fri 05-Aug-11 22:15:49

Love kathy Reichs, * Zephrine* ...so much better than Patricia Cornwell ...nothing like Bones ...read the books...love her Canadian fella! Hick!! ...don't believe I've said that!! ...mixing my brandy too much... only stepped out of the party for some fresh air!! Why aren't you there?

Zephrine Fri 05-Aug-11 22:33:46

Stepped out for the same reason, can't stand the pace these days!!

numberplease Fri 05-Aug-11 22:36:13

Zephrine, I love Kathy Reichs`s books, have read `em all. I`ve been recommended to read books by Robert Crais, I``ve tried 2 and quite liked them, so will try some more.

yumnan Sat 06-Aug-11 15:34:52

KateRose is Times Legacy the latest one from Barbara Erskine? I have read most of her books and loved all of them. If you enjoyed that one you would probably also enjoy The Rose Labyrinth by Titania Hardie, and the two recent novels by Kate Morton.

gma Sat 06-Aug-11 18:20:36

Just finished reading 'The poison tree' by Erin Kelly - just saw it in the library and got it on a whim!! I have really enjoyed it. At first I thought it was a bit slow but picked up somewhat in the first 30 pages. It is the story of a rather naive girl who finishes university and has no plans for her immediate future. A notice on the university bulletin board however changes her whole life in a way she could not have thought possible. I thought, by halfway through that I had cracked the ending, but I was wrong!!!!! A good, well written book, and I have ordered her next novel!! I had not seen any reviews for it, I was not swayed by anybody elses opinions.

jangly Sun 07-Aug-11 02:49:37

Conn Iggledun's Emperor series. All about Julius Caesar. Starting from when he was young and gorgeous.

Oh, and that Marcus Brutus......

Sigh
