"I pulled on a pair of cotton gloves and wandered over to the bed, whistling softly through my teeth - a habit that severely tries my husband, friends, and anyone working near me in the library"

He took shelter under a great pendicktree, and lying there wrapped in his cloak he thought of his old master Ogion, who might still be on his autumn wanderings over the heights of Gont, sleeping out with leafless branches for a roof and falling rain for house-walls.

I once went to an auction in a house about a mile way. I fancied books on a shelf that was LOT NO 60. On the day of the auction the house was full to overflowing. I squeezed into a space by the door. When I heard the word SIXTY I waved my paddle and the hammer came down. A while later when I went to collect my books I discovered I had paid £60 for what at first I thought was a shelf full of books but it turned out that I had bought ALL THE BOOKS in the shelf lined study - from floor to ceiling. Hundreds and hundreds of them. It took a lot of car trips to take them home and I have given loads to charity shops and anyone who can find something of interest among the piles in the garage, spare room etc. There was however one of interest. It was a Fake book - pages hollowed out and inside was...................................?

Could just be toothache (comment about Amanda moaning, not a quote)

Nelliemoser Sat 28-Sept-13 12:19:58

Mrs Hat that sounds rather racy! wink

gracesmum Sat 28-Sept-13 12:04:31

Glad to see you have been reinstated (not a quote)
"What makes bullies, and how do they select their victims?" (that is)

Elegran Sat 28-Sept-13 10:23:53

Ignored it and moved on. That is not a quote either.

Greatnan Sat 28-Sept-13 07:25:50

There are some curmudgeons everywhere, are there not? People who need to tell others to 'get a life' usually have a fairly poor life themselves.
That is not a quote!

'But at rush hour, a whiffler is not merely useful, but necessary'.

Nelliemoser Sat 28-Sept-13 06:46:02

JaneA My copy was a Christmas present from my Grandma in 1957 when I was 9. (Its written in the book!)

janeainsworth Fri 27-Sept-13 23:42:01

Oh I loved those books Nellie - my Grandpa always encouraged me to read and he gave me those, and the Heidi books too.

Nelliemoser Fri 27-Sept-13 23:19:37

JaneA Yes its the name Clover that gives it away to anyone who has ever read the book

janeainsworth Fri 27-Sept-13 23:08:21

Splendid idea.

That's actually the sentence, not my reflection on this thread, amusing though the thread issmile

Nellie - What Katy Did?

Greatnan Fri 27-Sept-13 21:19:48

'And from here, they will build lives, get jobs, be fruitful'.

mrshat Fri 27-Sept-13 20:52:09

"Amanda moaned"

Lona Fri 27-Sept-13 18:28:19

thatbags ..... 'peduncle'.....I don't know what on earth that is but I like it!

Kurcher and others imagine that in the centre of the channel of the Maelstrom is an abyss penetrating the globe, and issuing in some very remote part-the Gulf of Bothnia being somewhat decidedly named in one instance.

Elegran Fri 27-Sept-13 18:00:50

Is it cheating to scour the bookcase for likely titles, and be disappointed when page 52 is blank, or just has a chapter heading?

dustyangel Fri 27-Sept-13 17:43:47

Don't know whether it would be cheating to cross the room or not, but I find myself picking up random books and checking page 52, fifth sentence in them.
This thread is fun Elegran.

Elegran Fri 27-Sept-13 16:47:28

"The phantom vanished: only the motes of dancing dust were left, resuming their random patterns in the air."

grumppa Fri 27-Sept-13 16:22:26

"It was opened in 1901 by the City and South London Railway (C&SLR), which would later merge with the Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway (CCE&HR) to form what is now the Northern Line."

Sorry about that, but I felt it would be cheating to cross the room and grab vol. 1 of A la Recherché du Temps Perdu, which only has four complete sentences on page 52 anyway.

Elegran Fri 27-Sept-13 16:15:35

Radio Times remains culturally significant for two reasons.

Elegran Fri 27-Sept-13 16:13:40

Now when they call each other cousin, it's with the certain knowledge that they are.

Nelliemoser Fri 27-Sept-13 16:06:53

"In bed," said Clover meekly.

Someone might just get that one.

dustyangel Fri 27-Sept-13 16:06:00

To Stella it sounded something like a prayer, 'Oh,' she told him, 'it's much worse than that.'

Nelliemoser Fri 27-Sept-13 16:05:20

That was a quote not an observation on this lovely thread! Are we allowed to post more than one a day?
Medic Go heal yourself we are enjoying this.

Nelliemoser Fri 27-Sept-13 16:00:31

As you study a course, and range over a number of different topics, your mind can become cluttered with lots of disconnected bits and pieces of information.
