Hi
This week I launched my first self published book. I have written and illustrated The Amberstone Dragon an adventure story for older children and adults. This is now available on a digital format in the Amazon Kindle Store.

The reason for starting this post is I would really like to chat to anyone who has done the same thing. What process did you use to promote your book? I am on Facebook and the usual media platforms, but at 68 it does sometimes seem rather daunting. Any help would be wonderful. Thanks x

Really, Iam64? Perhaps not in the 19th century...

Soutra Mon 01-Jun-15 11:25:03

I think somebody might have been channelling her inner Enid Blyton! (Maybe getting into character for thebookgrin )

Riverwalk Mon 01-Jun-15 11:28:10

I may have one more in me.

How many books have you written soon?

I have to say, reading your many posts over the months I'd never have guessed that you were an author.

Jane10 Mon 01-Jun-15 12:58:52

Surely that's a bit uncalled for riverwalk? There seems to be some history going on between some posters against soontobe. Probably I'm being naive but this was an interesting thread until people started complaining about her.

Maggiemaybe Mon 01-Jun-15 13:04:12

No, you're not being naive, Jane10.

Riverwalk Mon 01-Jun-15 13:10:08

I'm simply saying Jane that soon's posting style, and the fact that she has never alluded to being an author surprises me - just as regulars on here would be surprised if I suddenly claimed to be one.

Anya Mon 01-Jun-15 13:22:05

Some 'history' is about right Jane, it's just a shame that other, who you might have thought to be more kindly, have chosen to follow the BBB line!

Anya Mon 01-Jun-15 13:23:07

other some others

I have much admiration for you Mimosa and I wish you every success. (the illustrations are lovely).

I searched "advice from writers about marketing digital books" and quite a few results came up. Some of them may be useful to you (I would tend to avoid any that look like they're businesses trying to get your custom).

Mimosa Mon 01-Jun-15 18:05:18

Thank you so much for all your help and advice, so appreciated.

Mimosa Mon 01-Jun-15 18:07:26

Thank you very much Eloethan for your advice, I am going to look at advice from writers about marketing digital books. Also, thank you for your kind comments re my illustrations. x

I have only been on Gransnet for a short while but am rather confused as to where my post on Self Publishing is going, so would like to say thank you and best regards to all the other people who have joined in.

Mimosa Mon 01-Jun-15 18:14:16

Thank you very much Anya for your kind comment. I don't think I will be adding to this post I started as I don't really understand what has happened to my original message. Thanks again.

Mimosa Mon 01-Jun-15 18:15:14

Thank you, my advice is to go for it.

Mimosa Mon 01-Jun-15 18:19:57

Jane10 thank you so much for this very valuable information, I am going to look into the writer's collective possibility. I have mentioned to a couple of other very helpful people here that I don't think I will be adding much more to my original post as the post has got rather confusing to say the least.

Mimosa Mon 01-Jun-15 18:27:33

mcem...thank you...but I feel my post has completed been lost here!

absentgrandma Mon 01-Jun-15 19:25:53

I'm sorry you fell foul of the hard core thread disruptors, mimosa. They are a complete pain-in-the-proverbial with their vitriol. The rest of them merely act like children by posting stupid comments which bear no relation the the OP. Unfortunately such is the way of the mini coven that inhabits Gransnet ( and they think are really clever/funny)

After suggesting a writers room as a new category the usual suspects jumped and posted 'Things They Had Written in Autograph Albums'.......God help us !!

Apart from a couple of posters who have first hand knowledge of the publishing world, the rest know sod all. So....carry on regardless . You have achieved something your average aspiring writer dreams about. I am in awe

A sane voice absent grandma smile

janerowena Mon 01-Jun-15 20:18:28

Good luck, mimosa. I hope it does well.

Anya Mon 01-Jun-15 20:19:46

Mimosa smile good on you.

Absentgrandma well said

If I CBA I might take issue with the above. Correct me if I am wrong ( and I am sure somebody will) but from what I have seen the posts on that particular thread predate Mimosa's*"subverted" self publishing thread by at least 2 months . Now that is really clever.
Who are the "usual suspects" then, this "mini coven"?? And what is wrong with their posts?

I don't think Mimosa's original thread has been lost, I have read comments from ChrisCal and others and have invited her to tell us more about the process of writing and self-publishing her book.
As an exercise in awareness raising I think it has been quite effective, I have downloaded my sample chapter as have no doubt other members and now it is down to us to see if we want to buy the book, based in what we have read.
I see the point about loss of visual impact in Kindle editions, though, illustrations are a weak point of Kindle books and if these are truly integral to the text, an alternative might be better.

Disingenuous.

Leticia Tue 02-Jun-15 07:04:12

Twitter is good for promoting books. There are lots of authors, artists, photographers etc trying to get their work known on there. It reaches a lot of people.

NanKate Tue 02-Jun-15 07:11:28

Well said Absentgrandma.

Soutra Tue 02-Jun-15 08:18:24

*By hook or by crook . . " is that the thread, Absentgrandma?

Do ALL the contributors to "by hook or by crook" qualify for what you refer to as the "mini coven"?
