What are you reading now?

At the moment, I`m reading My Sister`s Secret, by Tracy Buchanan. I read another of her books recently, No Turning Back, a sort of thriller but not a thriller, I think this may be more of the same, but liking it,

Elrel The only other book of hers that I've read - apart from Gentlemen and Players - is Blackberry Wine (a long time ago). It was a bit weird but I stuck with it and enjoyed it.

I found the Latin a bit off-putting. I couldn't be bothered to look up all the meanings.

I am really enjoying "At the edge of the orchard" by Tracy Chevalier. I have read all her other books , and she never fails to really grab my attention. This book starts in 1838 with a poor family barely scratching a living in the swamps of Ohio growing apples . Life is so hard and all depends on the apples harvest. I will have my nose in it tonight until Broadchurch starts! And then a short read in bed!

Eloethan - I'll let you know! Gentlemen and Players, I felt, was excellent, so much humour as well as mystery. I haven't yet got around to looking up the meaning of all those Latin tags! I did find the meaning of 'podex' however!
I couldn't get into The Blue-eyed Boy but she has written some great books.

Halfway through "Cold Earth" Ann Cleeves latest from her Shetland series.

Just finished Graham Swift's novella, "Mothering Sunday". Beautifully written and luminously evocative of a milestone day in one woman's life.

I've just finished 'The Irish RM' series by Somerville and Ross. A hundred years old and absolutely hilarious. The writing is so good. I'd seen the series on TV many years ago but the books are (if possible) better.

I can't believe it Elrel, I'd just typed a post on Different Class and Gentleman and Players. I looked up to see the most recent posts and saw that directly above what I had typed was your last post - talking about exactly the same books!

I've stayed up late to finish Different Class and, although at the start I found it quite funny and very intriguing, I have to say it became increasingly convuluted and unbelievable. In my view, it was nothing like as clever as Gentlemen and Players which I thought was rivetting right up to the end. Perhaps I'm no longer able to follow such complex plots, so I hope you find it more enjoyable than I did.

I've just re-read Joanne Harris's 'Gentlemen and Players'. Although I knew the main plot twist I'd forgotten others and enjoyed it as much as the first time. My reason for rereading was that I've bought, and am looking forward to reading, her sequel 'Different Class' and wanted to refresh my memory about the characters.

Au Revoir Liverpool got unexpectedly better, so I enjoyed it after all. I`m now reading The Sweethearts, by Lynn Russell and Neil Hanson. It`s the true memories of a group of women who worked at the Rowntree`s factory in York from the age of 14, starting in 1932.

I'm hooked on Erica James at the moment, something light reading while I'm knitting.

I will read the Margaret Forster you have mentioned BB, thank you. There are plenty of her books in our local hospice charity bookshop I'm told.
Our book club has just started Esther Freud's Mr Mac and Me. The Mr Mac is Rennie Macintosh.

Morgana was it " Have the Men had Enough"? I like Shadow Baby and also Precious Lives I just love her use of prose

birthday present from DD.

I like Margaret forster too. Particularly the one about her mum can't remember the title. But it helped me understand how frustrated my own mum felt with the restricted lives that women generally had in those days.

Nana3 I love Margaret Forster too and have all her books.

Just enjoyed Keeping the World Away by Margaret Forster, it was a good read. Her husband, Hunter Davies, was on Radio 4 last week talking about her.

I loved Kate Atkinson's 'Life after Life', but it took me a while to get into 'A God in
Ruins'. I am now reading 'Behind the Scenes at the Museum' and it is taking me some time to get to grips with the format, but there is no denying what a phenomenally good writer she is.

The Last Mile was really good. I then read A Wartime Wife, by Lizzie Lane, enjoyed that, I`m now reading Au Revoir Liverpool, by Maureen Lee. I`ve read other books by her and liked them a lot, but not sure about this one yet, I'm finding it hard to like the main character.

Just finished young skins by Colin Barrett. Short stories set in Ireland. Very gritty!

Eloethan - yes, I sent the book to my co-grandmother who was brought up in India and whose DF worked for the railway. She loved the book as much as I did and couldn't put it down. She and a friend also greatly enjoyed the film and took plenty of tissues. I've not yet seen it.
I like the Tracy Chevalier books I've read and have been fascinated by the story of Mary Anning for years. I'll look forward to reading 'Remarkable Creatures' - thank you for mentioning it.

I`ve just finished Gransnet book of the month, That`s How it Always is. Wasn`t too sure at first about it, but ended up enjoying it, probably because the author was writing from experience. Am just about to start The Last Mile, by David Baldacci, I know it`ll be good, it`s a Baldacci! It`s the second in the Amos Decker series.
