Children's book giveaway: Give Please a Chance

My 3 year and % year old grandsons read this book with me. The 5 year old could read most of the text with a little prompting and the 3 year old contributed all the pleases. I loved the fact there were so many different illustrators and situations to discuss. I thought it might be a little long but it kept both their attention all the way through. It is so long that it would be easy to miss out some pages and still enjoy the book but I think it is good to discuss those situations that children might not have experienced. I read the book to my little grandson over Christmas. He is just beginning to talk, so he says "peace" instead of "please" because he hasn't quite mastered saying the letter "L" .

I like the concept of kindness that underpins the book - in alluding to give peace a chance.

What a lovely book. Thank you for my copy. I loved the fact that so many different illustrators added their artwork to this. I think the variety added to the fun. There is a nice wide range of situations covered and everyone should be able to find at least one they love. My GS and I particularly enjoyed 'Can I keep him? Please?' and It's my favourite book. Ever! Please?' Just adorable. As far as the message goes, this may be more of a lesson to the adults than the children - to teach their children the magic words please and thank you.

Thank you for the book. I liked the illustrations but agree with others that the praying page could be difficult for some to explain. This is a book which is a must for sharing with young children to encourage discussions of why we say 'please' in each of the situations. My GD has been taught to say please but I liked the idea of discussing her ideas of why 'please' is important.

My GD (almost 3) enjoyed reading this with me, she particularly enjoyed talking about what she thought the children had been doing and what they asked for. My daughter is not religious so we glossed over the page with the child praying. Having looked at the book all the way through a couple of times, GD wanted to revisit a couple of the pages,bath time and swimming (probably because she could relate easily to both situations having done both very recently) . Thank you, I'm sure this is a book that all 3 GC will enjoy

My grandaughter is one today and just starting to learn the importantance of using the word 'please'. She loves books and was engrossed by the wonderful illustrations and we adults were impressed by the number of different situation that it is used in and also that using please doesn't always mean that you get what you want. I like the praying and Christmas pages as we are Christian and rather than leave these out I would like to see a few more religions incorporated so that every child has a more balanced opinion and a better understanding of each othe's world. At the end of the day everyone will buy books with situations that appeal to them. Thank you for the opportunity and I hope that it sells well.

I read this book with several of my grandchildren (ages 1 - 6)during the Christmas holiday and they seemed to like it - probably more than I did. It wasn't the type of book I would buy, and I agree with several other reviewers about the religious aspect, which wasn't necessary. Also, the word 'please' didn't always seem appropriate for some of the situations portrayed. I liked the quality of the hardback book and of the paper/print size. My grandchildren really enjoyed the illustrations and we found these generated plenty of discussion. The concept of encouraging children to use the word 'please' was a a good one, and I think this would go down well in a nursery school, for example. My 6 year old grandson seemed to love the fact that he could easily read it to his younger siblings. We talked about the various situations and the fact that not all of them would result in a positive outcome (eg taking all the kittens, having seconds) - which was an important lesson to learn. So thank you from all 5 grandchildren for giving them the opportunity to review this book.

Thank you for our copy of this beautifully illustrated book, very good quality & an important message...remembering to say "Please". A word sometimes forgotten when the grandchildren are engrossed in what they're doing. I didn't feel the words and pictures always made sense together, & would omit the religious ones.

Thank you for this book. I read it with my Grandaughters on Boxing day, they are two and a half and four and a half.I read it separately with each child. We all loved the pictures and the concept of saying 'Please' However in some of the situations I had to explain why 'Please' was used as it wasn't obvious to a child right away.
I agree with other posters about the 'Praying' scenario. I was fine with it but I know my Son and Daughter in law are not so I had to say the little girl was saying 'Please can I have a good sleep' It made it a bit awkward.Overall a really nice book and I agree wholeheartedly with teaching children manners as early as possible.It would be a good book for nursery teachers to use if the religion one was dropped.Now can we have a 'Thank you' book ? !!

I managed to read this book to my grandchildren on Christmas Eve as we were staying there for Christmas. They are aged 3 and 5 and both children were engrossed and entered into the 'please' quotes at the end of each of the pages. The 3 year old was really just copying big sister but still entered into the spirit of the book.
I thought that it was a super book and a good idea to emphasise the 'please' aspect of everyday life. Many thanks for sending me a copy. It will be well read I'm sure.

I like the concept of this book and the variety of situations it portrays, many of which will be familiar to most children. It's bright and colourful and a good quality book but if I'm honest there was something about the illustrating that I didn't warm to. Maybe a bit too cartoon like for my taste and possibly more suitable for children older than the books target age group?

We put great importance of the words Please and Thank You in our family, so I was very happy to receive this large, hardback book.
I read it with DGDs aged 2 and 4, and we talked about each picture and what was going on. The only one they didn't really get, was the girl with the swimming goggles and snorkel. They were particularly sympathetic with the girl wanting to choose all the puppies!
As a retired Early years teacher, I appreciated the large print and few words per page.
I thought at £6.99 it was good value as well.

I liked the idea that the illustrations were done by different artists. I think the Christmas one could have been left out as there are so many differnt religions today. However, I thought there was the right amount of humour, plus other situations which were thoughtful. My three year old grand child added 'please' on the end of each page, but it did not hold her attention all the way through the book in one session, so will have to go back to it again with her. She enjoyed the pictures and the bright colours. Generally, a nice book to give and receive. Thank you for sending it to me.

The book has a nice hardback for children to read on their laps. i & my grandchild (GC) loved the nice sky blue background with gold raised writing (we loved running our hands over the raised words of the authors).

I liked the small intro from Bill on why the author's wrote the book and it explained the important of PLEASE and we liked the bright RED and BLUE lines as a intro to the book.

The font was easy to read for me and my GC and the pictures were very colorful by the different illustrators. I liked the 'which part goes where'picture as it brought back some school memories when i used to wear a tie all day. My GC liked cookie picture as she asks for cookies all the time when she visits.

Overall the book is very good and for £7 the finish is to a high standard, which i liked. The only down side i found was in some cases i wouldnt have used PLEASE myself ie 'I've been extra good this year..PLEASE'

just recieved my book, its a beautiful book with lovely pictures and easy for a young child to understand. I too did not like the page where the child is praying to God, there was no need to put that in this book, there are so many different religions that this book will not suit everyone! if I was going to purchase the book this page would certainly have stopped me. Not sure that my grandsons parents will be ok with this book as they are not religious. Might have to suggest that they glue those pages together so they cant be seen, such a shame to spoil such a lovely book!

I really like all the different situations that have been chosen and illustrated in this book. Children at different ages are going to identify with them and the struggles and frustrations of daily life! The simplicity of the book does make for those 'again, again!' requests, and the illustrations are good for demonstrating the problems and for further talking about it.
I particularly liked that some of the issues raised are ones where even if you say please the answer is going to have to be no. That is an important life lesson!
The only thing I didn't like was the page where the child is praying to God. Not everyone believes in a religion (I don't) or this particular religion and I wish that had been left out.
