I did not realise many of these authors had died.

ah i used to love reading enid blyton when i was a kid i used to read a famous five book a night. Then even though i was a teenager i read the magic faraway tree books and i used to love a book series mallory towers i think it was called. I remember calling my friend at 2am once as we had forgotten the dogs name in the famous five books and i just had a flash of inspiration in the early hours

Just adore Dorothy Dunnett’s Lymond series, that and Diana Gabaldon are my absolute favourites. Also used to love Elizabeth Goudge’s books when I was younger.

Definitely Margaret Forster, and Miss Read, especially her village school books.

I don’t read a lot of fiction, preferring biography and letters, but I’m glad to see other people here feeling the lack of new Miss Read books. I’ve read them all, many several times, and I also have them as audiobooks. (Gwen Watford is the best reader.) All those characters are quite real to me - her friend Amy, Mrs Pringle, Ella Bembridge, Harold Shoesmith. I would know them if I met them in the street.

Henning Mankel - always awaited his next novel with great excitement. Sadly missed but I still enjoy re-reading.

There was something about Rosamund Pilcher's books. You were there somehow. RIP a wonderful writer. ??

She only died earlier this year but my favourite author has to be Rosamunde Pilcher

I remember the Jalna books, I once had one for a school prize, seems an odd choice now!

Yes grannybuy, still have all Noel Barber’s books on my shelf, time for a re read. (I had forgotten about Malcolm Saville until he was mentioned on this post. Loved his books as a child. Googled him, he died in Hastings in ‘82. I was actually on the prom in Hastings yesterday, first time since the 60’s, creepy. Must be a sign).

Mazo de la Roche ( Jalna series ) and L M Montgomery ( Anne of Green Gables ) . Anyone familiar with Joy Packer and Noel Barber ? I also enjoyed Malcolm Saville, as a child.

David Lodge. Always made me laugh out loud

Sourcerer48 Sat 20-Apr-19 21:29:10

Rosamund Pilcher
Penny Vincenzi
Anita Shreve
and best of all for me - Bryce Courtney. He wrote the most marvelous books with the best characterisations I've ever read.

Dick Francis

Oh yes. Jean Plaidy. I loved historical novels. When a teenager I read all the supernatural novels of Dennis Wheatley. Liked Mary Renault also. Might try and find these books and read them again.

I'm shocked l didn't even realize that some of these authors had died. I really miss maeve binchy.

Granless Sat 20-Apr-19 20:41:39

Interestingly, I only read factual books. Fiction to me seems a waste of reading time. I await opinions otherwise. smile

phantom12 Sat 20-Apr-19 20:08:32

Miss Read, Rosamunde Pilcher, Sue Townsend and Rebecca Shaw.

tinaf1 Sat 20-Apr-19 19:12:04

Emma Hannibal where did that come from ? Emma Hannigan

humptydumpty Sat 20-Apr-19 18:56:58

Mary Wesley - wonderful!

tinaf1 Sat 20-Apr-19 18:47:28

Anniemac102 I have read Monica Mcinerney but not tried Emma Hannibal will have to try her thanks, forgotten about Rosmunde Pilcher she is another of my favourites. Also Jean Plaidy can also remember reading them when I was much younger and how she reignited my love of history.
It’s sad when your favourite author dies and you know there will be no more of their stories to enjoy
