If I remember rightly from your 50 books a year thread, we usually have similar reading tastes. We’ll have to agree to disagree on this one!

People are taking this book far more seriously than I think the author intended them to do.

It is just a lighthearted bit of fluff that is meant to be enjoyed at a very light level and not for those who are looking for a serious whodunnit with plausible characters. If you are looking for that then you are going to be disappointed.

I can only assume that those who have raved about this trite load of drivel don't read much and have latched on to it because of the massive over hype and the fact that the writer is quite high profile.

I can't understand why this book was in the best seller charts for so long, but then again so was 50 Shades of Grey. I think like many I found it completely mediocre there are so many better books by far that get a modicum of the recognition. I loved The Thursday Murder Club and am enjoying the 2nd book in the series just as much. Richard Osman writes with humour and style and his cosy murder style is such a welcome change from the current fad for gory, bleak and depressing thrillers.

I watched Graham Norton interviewing Richard Osman on his new book. Osman had received rave reviews and there was talk of a possible film deal too. Norton also had a debut novel out at the same time. Having read both Osman's 'Thursday Murder Club' and Norton's 'Holding' the reviews and film deal should be going the other way.

I ploughed my way through this book and only finished it because someone who loved it had lent it to me.

Next time I see her I will be able tell her why I didn't like it. Richard osman has an inventive mind when it comes to plots, but his ideas of what older people are like, even in a retirement complex, is so hackneyed, stereotyped and two dimensional.

The other thing that niggled me, which I know is trivial, is that retirement complexes are almost always built by companies or charities who specialise in this field, not by, again, two dimensiona,l cliched, crooked flash small time property developers.

I think next time Richard Osman writes a book he should try and set it in a milieu, he is familiar with, where he knows lots of people who work/live the lives of the characters.

He could be a good writer, be he isn't there yet.

I would put it in the lightweight, holiday read category. Not great, but mildly amusing and entertaining.

Caro41, I guess that the 'strange reason' for this book's longevity as a best seller is it's author's popularity. He always comes over as a 'nice guy' and spontaneously witty. I enjoyed the book but wouldn't read it again.

For some strange reason this book has spent longer on the best sellers list than any I can remember . I thought it was quite witty to begin with but then the style palled . It didn’t really warrant the tremendous hype and I felt that it could have been far shorter .

I’m pretty much like most other people on here. I thought it was an OK read, but not as good as I expected. My granddaughter loaned me her copy and I was glad I hadn’t forked out cash for it myself!

I absolutely loved it. Cant wait for his next later this year

The abridged version, on the the BBC radio, as I said before cut the last hard conversation Elisabeth had with Penny.

I’ve wondered about this book after reading some reviews. I think I’ll give it a go at supermarket price.

We read it for our Zoom BookGroup, it got our highest score so far this year.

Everyone enjoyed it very much.

They had it on radio 4 as an audio book I enjoyed it.

And enjoying it so far. Of course it’s a light read, but there’s nothing wrong with that. Different and quite funny IMO.

I’m still waiting for it to come out in a cheaper paperback - the sort I can get for £4.50 in Asda, £4.99 on the Kindle, or 3 for a fiver in The Works.?

I read too fast and get through too many to pay full price for anything, and I hate hardbacks.

I was hookwinked. Here was me thinking this was a club group for murderess grannies! ? Will have to check out the book though ?

I think he also said the film rights had been sold and he's got a deal for 3 more books in this series.
Mmm for me, 60% hype, 40% talent
