When the Wind Blows seems sadly too relevant in these times.

I have enjoyed his books and the DVD of the book. Last year we went to Winchester to see a retrospective exhibition of his work, He used to write a column in the Oldie Magazne but but not recently.

I looked it up and the average cost of a Wimbledon terraced house in the 1930s was £350.

Maybe he misread the 3 for an 8 when looking at the deeds after his parents death?

I've got Ethel and Ernest at home, Witzend and it's a lovely book, very moving but sad at the end. Some may dismiss it as a mere comic book but the words and pictures convey very powerful human emotions.

I’ve got most of RB’s books, including Fungus the Bogeyman which is usually a big hit with children. I love them all. I’ve seen all the animated films.
WTWB was performed at my local Rep. many years ago. It worked extremely well on stage (you’re warned beforehand about the very loud noises) and I’ve never seen so many of an audience in tears before or since. Totally heartbreaking, and confirmed to me that if the worst ever happened I’d want myself and everyone I loved to die in the initial blasts.

Thanks for comments about the DVD - must say that after reading that Jim Broadbent and Brenda Blethyn star in it, I was thinking again and have now ordered it.

As someone said, a 3 bed house in Wimbledon Park for £850 - on a single milkman’s wage!
Different times indeed - Dh’s parents lived in Wimbledon Park and prices are stratospheric now.

£850!!!!! Blimey! My great aunt Maggie and gt.uncle bought their first home a big semi det in Higher Blackley Manchester in 20s and it cost £350! And he worked for the Prudential, ! The same simply don't add up as. Mortgages then were usually no more than 50% value and often 2-3 different mortgages were secured to purchase a property. So the single milkman wage wouldn't cut it unless he had a huge capital contribution!?

Not to worry. The Ethel and Ernest animated film is brilliant!
It is beautiful in itself, but the DVD also has extended shorts on how the animation and musical/sound composition and performance were made. It is a wonderful educational experience all around, and especially for our grandchildren and students. They can be inspired in so many ways.

Thank you for reminding me of this story. I have the animated film saved on the tv. It is a wonderful slip into our social history that many of us can relate to. I think I'll watch it again this afternoon.

I love the book, animated version and all of Raymond Briggs' books and drawings. Recently, on a painting forum on Facebook, the theme was books and I painted this.

Have watched the animated version & found it quite beautiful & at times moving. Please watch it to warm the cockles of your heart ❤️

I watched the animated version a while ago, enjoyed it, it takes you on quite an emotional journey & is beautifully done.

Me too, I wouldn't be surprised if it's having a pretty frightening resonance for many under the current circumstances. Sending a wish and prayers to all for safer times and an end to the horror in Ukraine ??.

I watched "When the Wind Blows," with somebody who was staying with us whose life was in disarray. We always used to joke that somebody else had borrowed the family brain cell when he was born. However, this film absolutely blew him away and it provoked a thought process which was quite touching to watch. It was an inspirational film.

Just last weekend my friend had been talking about her late mother's plan to build a nuclear shelter following a Government guide , she'd dug it out and was going home to convert her understair cupboard such was her fear of another war . I mentioned Where the Wind Blows to her but she'd never seen/read it . I wonder where I could find it ?

I saw the animated film and it brought tears to my eyes. Made me think of my mum and dad, although they were younger than Ethel and Ernest.

I'm guessing that When The Wind Blows has crossed many people's minds recently.

Thanks, Jane Judge little ones often say what you are thinking but dare not voice.
They also pick up on things on T.V. and what people are talking about much more than you are aware.
I was careful after that what was said in front of them or read.Though I did reread the book myself and have been thinking about it lately before it was mentioned Gransnet.
We have a family friend married to a Ukrainian woman who is fighting in Mariupol,he was last heard from a week last Thursday.
My thoughts and sympathy goes to all Ukranians with their men folk fighting.
