I second 'Still Life' - just finished it for book club and loved it.

Fearless by Catrina Davies. A memoir about a road trip into Scandinavia, on a whim, in a battered old van with a cello and a hope/plan to busk her way around, with an initial repertoire of about 3 pieces. Young characters and interesting people along the way (of course). Enjoyable and interesting. I won't spoil it by telling you why she did this (it does come out early on on the book).

Has anyone read “The girl with the louding voice” or “Redhead at the side of the road “ . I have them for some reason and wondered if you enjoyed either or both ?

I'm currently reading and enjoying "She's Up To No Good" by Sara Goodman Confino.

A mix of ages of characters, some challenging family dynamics (but nothing gory!).
It's set across two time periods but easy to follow as it's chapter by chapter.

I have it on the Kindle app.

I’ve read The Girl with the Louding Voice’. I enjoyed it, a real eye opener! Won’t give too much away.

Lucca, I really enjoyed ‘ The girl wit the louding voice’. It took me a while to get into it as the patois was a little disconcerting to begin with. However, after the first chapters I could not put it down.
I am reading ‘The island of missing trees’. It is certainly different with a fig tree a spokesperson.

I've only just discovered Ellie Griffiths and I'm loving them. The mix of crime, archaeology, humour and, of course, Cathbad the druid is so entertaining.

What's Libby?

Retread Thu 08-Sept-22 11:45:47

Libby is the library (get it?) app Kindle equivalent. smile

Retread Thu 08-Sept-22 12:05:54

... as it's a library loan, the books are free of course.

grandMattie Thu 08-Sept-22 12:15:44

“The narrow door” by Joanne Harris
and it’s prequal “gentlemen and players”.
Any Mary Wesley you can get hold of, particularly “The vacillations if Poppy Carew” and “Jumping the queue”
The time traveler’s wife

It’s excellent - I have the app on my mobile phone .
You can get samples of books to try & also order books .
It’s saved me a fortune ??.

Jeffrey Archer tells a good tale, as does Sidney Sheldon.

Alypoole Thu 15-Sept-22 09:40:08

Thank you. I've just downloaded the app.

If you enjoyed the series, "Shetland" which ended last night, why not try Ann Cleeves' books on which the TV series is based. The characters and stories may come as a surprise to you, but you will be able to visualise the scenery. I'm starting to re-read them with "Raven Black".

This is short. Some challenge
but ultimately hopeful/optimistic. Lovely it.

I recently heard it on Borrowbox.

grandMattie Mon 16-Jan-23 16:46:32

my most recent favorite is "Lessons in Chemistry" - laugh out loud! Got it from Libby.
I bought a copy for DD and not only SiL read it, but it was passed on to all the in-laws.

Parlour Games
Amenable Women
Mrs. Fitton's Country Life
All by Mavis Cheek; quite tart, slightly feminist and funny.
