Ann Cleeves new series featuring her Detective Inspector Matthew Venn set in North Devon, around Barnstaple are very descriptive of the area, although I don't think they're as good as Vera (Northumberland) or Jimmy Perez (Shetland). All her books give good descriptions of the various landscapes.

I know what you mean about enjoying the setting, Ellie Griffiths' Ruth Galloway books really gave us the impetus to visit North Norfolk, I love the way she evokes not only the salt marshes but her home there, almost as good as the plot imo.

There's always Roy Grace's Brighton of course and his home, in the book, Henfield, mid Sussex often gets a mention, as well as the Sussex coastline adjacent to Brighton. Crimes can be a bit on the grisly side at times.

Oh I forgot, Cormoran Strike for central London, he's often in a pub somewhere in the west end downing Doom Bar! although he did go home to Cornwall in one of the books and Robyn goes back home to Yorkshire in several of them.

Imogen Quy series by Jill Paton Walsh. Imogen is a nurse in a Cambridge College.
My favourite is A Piece of Justice, like the best detective mysteries, you learn something along the way, and this one brings mathematics, quilting and women's history together.
And I love the Aelf Fen mysteries by Alys Clare, set in the reign of William 11.
There is an old-fashioned website (but they do keep it reasonable up to date): www.stopyourekillingme.com/
where you can search mystery series by location, era and occupation!

Susie Steiner, has written some good crime featuring DI Manon Bradshaw, only 3 in the series but I think they're all good, set in and around Cambridgeshire.
