What was your favourite book/books as a child?

I was fairly obsessed with stories of girls living in ancient manor houses with secret passages and priests' holes.

I think I went straight from Enid Blytons, with what seemed like just a small break to Agatha Christies which I started reading in my teens! Like the Enid Blytons, I read the whole lot!

I read everything and anything ,,my Dad had 6 library tickets , how he managed that I don’t know ,
He would lend me two if I was to be kept occupied and quiet , that’s how I started to read the Biggles books , I thought the librarian would know they weren’t my tickets if I took girls books !
The Worrals series weren’t just as exciting ,
There was a series of “ career “ books , I can’t remember the names , about girls becoming a nurse etc.
I was scolded for standing reading a whole book instead of taking it out , in those days you had to keep it for two days before you could get another ,
It seemed riches when I could get three books and take them home to devour

The ones I enjoyed the most roughly in timeline order: still have two of them.

There were many. A huge book of Grimm’s Fairy Tales; Nathanial Hawthorne’s ‘Tanglewood Tales’ was a huge favourite and I’ve loved the Greek myths to this day. I read and re-read the Famous Five books, Just William and all the Children’s Classics except for the Water Babies which for some reason I hated. As a teenager, my father introduced me to H Rider Haggard, but my English teacher introduced me to Dennis Wheatley and Dad didn’t approve because they were books about black magic! I read them all anyway! Also Professor Fred Hoyle’s ‘The Black Cloud’, ‘Ossian’s Ride’ and the ‘Andromeda’ series, some of which were adapted for television.

There was a period when my mother visited her friend for tea every Friday, and I had to make my way there after school. I loved going to Kate's house as she was kind, didn't fuss me, and made Spam and chips. The two adults left me alone to read my book from the school library, and the occasion of reading a book made the book the pleasant thing it was. Thanks Kate, long dead but I still remember you and your quiet house.

One book I always meant to read, but never got round to was Mary Poppins.

I had so many! As an only child with busy parents I spent hours and hours reading!

I loved Heidi, Black Beauty, the Famous Five, Mallory Towers and the Arthur Ransom Swallows and Amazons. At a younger age I loved the Water Babies (very sad), Alice in Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass, Winnie the Pooh and Peter Pan!

All of Enid Blytons books, started with Secret Seven& Famous Five then St Care’s, Mallory Towers and just loved all of them. I used to go to my grandparents every Sunday to read in peace. Still a great reader now loving all the cosy murder mysteries. My kindle and kindle unlimited are my best friend😂

My favourite book was Jane Eyre written by Charlotte Brontë.

Treasure Island when I was a young child.

Withering Heights when I was early teens.

That should say Wuthering Heights!

Little Women, and the rest of the series.

I also loved Gobbolino, The Witch's Cat.
