I wasn’t going to pay for it so I waited until the library had it. Glad I didn’t pay for it, having read it. Not a good book and quite delusional ,unfortunately. I was hoping to feel some sympathy for the ‘author’ ( if he actually managed to write it himself ) but no, nada. Self indulgence par excellence. Ah well, sometimes the press are right …

What did you study Joseann? Must have been a really special day, one you won’t forget in a hurry. 😊

Thank you, Gandmarderby, my degree was French/German. You brought a little tear to my eye, the occasion was very special. My mum, was very ill, but had a seat in The Spencer Family's box and she felt like the Queen proudly watching me! Sadly she died shortly afterwards.
Fond memories. ❤️

The Duke of Kent is president

maddyone Tue 01-Aug-23 11:20:56

Yes, but wasn’t the Duchess of Kent the royal patron until she retired from public life? I think the Queen took over then, but you’re right, we didn’t see her there. Lots of other royals there though every year.

Granmarderby10 Tue 01-Aug-23 11:12:49

Rarely ever saw the late Queen there though did we? Duke of Kent yes… but

maddyone Tue 01-Aug-23 11:04:17

It’s not just this yearGranmarderby. Catherine is the royal patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. She took over that role in 2016 from Queen Elizabeth.
The royal family have always attended Wimbledon and been involved with tennis.

Granmarderby10 Tue 01-Aug-23 10:28:02

Definitely Joseann but not so much sporty but horsey(ness).
Wasn’t this at least part of Diana’s problem.
The Queen, Queen Mother, Camilla, the Prince Charles and his polo, horses, horses horses.
I sense this is changing now with the Wales’s at Wimbledon this year, and Princess Anne is often highly thought of by serving and ex military.

Not much interest in Princess Anne I wonder why.

Wrong Macgran, Princess Anne is well thought of in Britain. She is recognised for her hard work and her determination to support the monarch, firstly her mother and now her brother. She has no airs and graces, is simply hard working and polite, and respectful to the monarch and institution of monarchy. She doesn’t flaunt herself in any way, in particular she doesn’t flaunt herself in ill fitting and extremely expensive clothes like Meghan does. She was considered to be extremely attractive and eligible when she was a young woman but obviously now she’s a woman in her seventies (like many of us) and she still has an enviable figure and apparently endless energy. Like Meghan she’s been married twice but rather than return her rings by post, she negotiated a civilised divorce from her first husband and now his grown up child from his second marriage enjoys a close relationship with her half siblings, Peter and Zara. Princess Anne’s husband is totally supportive of her and her work, does not seek any publicity, and has shown respect to the monarchy throughout their marriage.
Incidentally, whilst Anne had a big white wedding to her first husband, she recognised that a quiet family affair in Scotland was more appropriate for a second marriage, unlike Meghan who wanted an extremely fancy, status wedding paid for by her new father in law, who she has little to nothing to do with now, and of course, the good old British public.

Give me Anne any day.

Are you in the UK Macgran? If you are, I’m surprised you don’t know all this already.

Because she keeps her head down and works, MacGran?

However, perhaps you are too young to remember the media interest in Princess Anne when she was younger.
However, she didn't court publicity, she tried to avoid it as much as possible.

And prettier in reality than on tv. I respect her work ethic and lack of diva-ness. - Princess Anne, I mean.

Joseann Tue 01-Aug-23 08:25:02

Princess Anne handed me my degree on stage in the Royal Albert Hall. I like her. grin

Joseann Tue 01-Aug-23 08:23:23

Just a small random observation, Meghan wasn't sporty, which might have helped her in the family. She had no knowledge of being a team player or losing with grace.

Sparklefizz Tue 01-Aug-23 08:12:13

Yes, I'm another great fan of Anne maddyone. She has all of the qualities you mention and would have made a great queen. She didn't make a big song and dance over the attempt to kidnap her despite people being shot. She is the epitome of "Keep calm and carry on."

Aveline Tue 01-Aug-23 08:08:47

Also lacks empathy

Joseann Tue 01-Aug-23 08:05:06

Megan is beautiful, stylish and that’s why the tabloids were so obsessed with her.
I agree. Add to that, intelligent, determined, hard working, and I think humorous too. The trouble is, for a rôle in the royal family, (nothing to do with her colour), she lacked class.

maddyone Tue 01-Aug-23 00:19:29

It’s a shame there’s not much interest in Anne because she is one of the hardest working royals. She was a wonderful support to her mother in her later years and particularly so after Prince Philip died. She was with her mother when she died. On the other hand, Harry missed the flight taking Andrew, Edward, William and Sophie to Scotland, and indeed delayed it because he was busy arguing that Meghan should accompany him to his grandmother’s deathbed. As if the Queen would have wanted Meghan anywhere near her during her final moments! I don’t care whether things work out for Harry and Meghan or not after all the heartache they have caused to both their respective families, but I dislike comments insinuating that Princess Anne is of no consequence. The hardest working royal, the supporter of her mother, and the no nonsense woman who runs her estate and equine establishment successfully, and who required no title for her children, and who represented her country in the Olympics. And who told a would be kidnapper ‘Not bloody likely’ when she was ordered to get out of her car, and who didn’t whine about press intrusion like Harry and Meghan, but told the press to ‘Naff off’ when they descended upon her to take photographs after she fell off her horse.
Go Anne, she’s a great girl with plenty of spunk.

I too read the book recently after a long wait from my local library. I thought the book was well written. H did a lot of flying around the world. He is a wealthy man. M and H would have been good for the RF. A friend in New Zealand reported that the NZ public adored them. Megan is beautiful, stylish and that’s why the tabloids were so obsessed with her.Same as Diana. Same with Kate. Not much interest in Princess Anne I wonder why. Hope things work out for M and H.

I heard it, narrated by “himself”. I”m a confirmed insomniac and i kept falling asleep!!! It’s on YouTube!

FannyCornforth Mon 31-Jul-23 18:06:51

Great. Crack on

Vintagenonna Mon 31-Jul-23 17:58:17

Joseann.

You are probably right!

Like some sub-atomic particles, hatreds or 'isms' often manifest themselves in pairs : racism/sexism etc. I am not sure being loathed because you are female AND black makes the experience any nicer.

Vintagenonna Mon 31-Jul-23 17:53:08

Anniebach, thank you for your interest. We married ourselves.

Joseann Mon 31-Jul-23 17:49:53

Syracute is right : a lot of gransnetters lap up the sensationalised drivel. Cats 'lap' so do dog of both genders.
Oooer.
I'm not in the habit of sniffing around for sensationalist drivel, and my pet hate is getting involved in the discussions about race or breed. You are barking up the wrong tree if you think the pack has it in for Meghan just because of her colour. I'm sorry your husband experienced hate, I hope he bit back.

Having re-read your post, Syracute, I see that you are actually besmirching the British public too.
As I say, I’d be interested to hear where you are, where there is a population in possession of such superior moral fibre.

Since it is of such great interest, I live in the U.K. The comments about me here are surreal . Sorry, for my poor punctuation . Now I know how Harry feels ! Nothing riles the British public like a Harry and /or Meghan thread.

Anniebach Mon 31-Jul-23 17:15:07

Did you get married three days before your marriage was registered?

Vintagenonna Mon 31-Jul-23 17:04:49

I'm glad they moved abroad - for their sake.

I'm not royal, not beautiful and not an actress. But I am of mixed race and married to a white husband who has had his share of deflected race-hatred to experience/observe/absorb over our many years together.

SueDonim

I haven’t read the book and am unlikely to but this made me laugh. nypost.com/2023/07/21/prince-harrys-memoir-spare-considered-the-most-discarded-book-this-summer-report/

This “ newspaper” is the same drivel as the Daily Mail . No facts just sensationalism and yet so many gransnetter’s lap that up . Surreal how much hate here . You would think you were all present for all these occasions .
