Caught a bit of the film on TV the other day so since I’d never read it, I got it on my Kindle for 49p. 🙂
Very funny in places, but a gritty depiction of pre WW2 ‘shabby genteel’ poverty. No miserable ending, though, thank goodness.
Another of George Orwell’s I read decades ago and still have somewhere, is A Clergyman’s Daughter. IIRC it was being sold off from the British Council Library in Nicosia back in the early 70s! Poor, downtrodden, bullied daughter of a very unpleasant vicar loses her memory and ends up IIRC in Kent, with hop-pickers from the East End.
