I loved Richard E.Grant in Keep The Aspidistra Flying .
It's been on TV twice recently .
He was perfect in the role .
I'd forgotten just how brilliant Orwell was .

What channel was the film on Witzend?

It was the only question I got right on last nights University Challenge final last night! I loved Orwell’s books when I was younger. I must revisit them. I was very shaped politically by A Clergyman’s Daughter which made me realise how easy it is to get into a downward spiral and not be able to get out of it.

Caught a bit of the film on TV the other day so since I’d never read it, I got it on my Kindle for 49p. 🙂
Very funny in places, but a gritty depiction of pre WW2 ‘shabby genteel’ poverty. No miserable ending, though, thank goodness.

Another of George Orwell’s I read decades ago and still have somewhere, is A Clergyman’s Daughter. IIRC it was being sold off from the British Council Library in Nicosia back in the early 70s! Poor, downtrodden, bullied daughter of a very unpleasant vicar loses her memory and ends up IIRC in Kent, with hop-pickers from the East End.
