Forgotten books

I read a lot and always have, usually a couple of books every week. Often, as soon as a book is finished, I forget the title, author and story, but if I start a book again I’ll soon realise I read it before, even if years ago.
I don’t read rubbish, I like them well-written and critically acclaimed and toss aside very many books which are well-reviewed but turn out to be poor.
There’s nothing wrong with my memory otherwise but books slip away like dreams. Is this common in old age or just because I read so much?

Wouldn't worry, I'm the same !!

I used to have a journal where I wrote the title, the author, how long it took to read, a quote and an opinion.

Now I have no idea where I put it!

I have had this problem ever since I can remember, which can make it difficult to recommend books to other people.

I read a great many books too. I don't mind reading a bit of rubbish every now and again.

Do you like to read fiction or non-fiction? I enjoy both I am reading an autobiography and a scientific book about nutrition at the moment. I couldn't tell you the title of either of them. Do you ever have more than one book on the go?

I use theGoodReads site where you can review every book you read and you have a record of all books you read.

I’m the same watermeadow and always have been, I’m a very transitory reader, for immediate gratification, tactile as I only read actual books.
If I have to read a book for a book club or an exam I really have to focus.

I’m the same. I’m an avid reader but as soon as I’ve finished a book I couldn’t even tell you the name of the main character most of the time!

I have always read a lot and have never remembered details of most books I read.

This thread is a big relief for me! So I'm not the only one who reads voraciously then moves on to the next one and forgets the one I've just read. There are exceptions of course. Some books really stay with me.

There are some that I remember, but most as you say are so transitory that I don’t even realise I’ve bought the same book until I’m half way through.

I read all books at least twice. First time, I find myself skipping and rushing to see how theplot works out. I then reread it immediately to take it more slowly, to notice the nuances of character and plot.

A lot of books then get kept to be read many times. I am currently rereading the novels of Jane Austen. I must have read them 100 times, but every time I notice something new.

I echo what Aveline has said. So glad to know I’m not the only one!

It is better to read rubbish than not to read at all and it depends on what you consider to be rubbish doesn't it.

I was just thinking the same thing. I’ve nearly finished reading ‘The Bastard of Istanbul’ which to me seems a very entwined story and is only now becoming clear to me. I’m going to re read it

I read lots of books that I can’t remember after I have finished it, but one I still remember I read about 60 years ago was called Sleep in the Woods. Set in New Zealand I believe and main character called Rose. Not sure why I remember this book after all this time, there must have been something about it

I'm not recommending this but my late mum used to spend most of her time reading and had the same problem so she started writing her initials in pencil at the back of the books she was taking back to the library so she could always check whether she'd already read them. Saved her going home for the wknd and finding all 4 new books had already been read.

Milest0ne Thu 22-Aug-24 12:12:05

At our library when the books are checked out , the screen shows up when a book has been already been borrowed

i read at least two books a week, sometimes more as my disability has me in the loo every 15 min during the night, i have about 300 books on my kindle, i don't read books more than once and if i start a book and get to about chapter 4/5 and can't get into the story i give up, i do remember the stories but can never remember the name of the book...lol

tattygran14 Thu 22-Aug-24 12:46:17

I worked in a public library, and we used to be very irritated by one person in particular, who would put her large black biro straggly initials on the pages.

That’s a good idea!

When I asked the librarian the name of a book I’d borrowed about a month ago, he told me that the system had been changed/upgraded and the archives were lost. So unhelpful 😡

Shirls52000 Thu 22-Aug-24 12:50:59

I use Good reads and U can log all the books I ve read on there, also Smaxin still telly ou if you try to order a book again that you ve ordered previously

I am the same, but this means that I can read books that I know I enjoyed before without remembering too much about the plot. I have read the Dorothy Dunnett series’, Lymond and oh what is his name? Over and over again.

PamQS Thu 22-Aug-24 13:14:48

Now I have a Kindle, it kindly tells me if I’ve already got the book I’m looking at in my library.

I don’t have a clue what most of the books I’ve read are about, I tend to read very light fiction, and the plots of romantic books are often very similar. If I suddenly remember the plot when I’m halfway through a detective novel, I stop reading it.
