Are you using a mobile phone or a tablet? Both have Bluetooth in your settings. You need to switch it on , if you're using headphones, you will need to hold down the on/ off button , until you hear ' Pairing ' it should then connect to the Bluetooth on your device

I looked up an escribe on Amazon. It is basically a Kindle that you can write on. It will not play sound. Kindles show books you have bought from Audible but you cannot listen to them on a Kindle. Look at the bottom of the machine - there are no speakers. The book will also download into the audible app on your phone/ tablet or laptop. Hope this helps.

You can listen to Audible books on a Kindle Fire - which can also be used a bit like a tablet/laptop. They cost less than the Kindles that are only for reading E-books on, and are in full colour.

Thank you all. I think I’ll get my husband a kindle Fire . I am baffled by all the things that I can and then can’t do. Do you know if the kindle fire will do large print as DH enlarges the print on my tablet for the newspapers. What I ideally want is a cross between a tablet and a kindle

Yes, you can change the font size to read.

That’s interesting. I keep meaning to subscribe to audible but am worried about clogging up my iPad with books. What I ideally want to do is store them on something else.

I’ve just messaged my daughter to ask her if she will help me set it up if I buy a Kindle Fire and subscribe to audible. It’s something I’ve been putting off for ages because I struggle to admit to myself that I no longer enjoy reading, something that has been such a huge part of my life.

You can get an Audible account via Amazon, (for Black Friday week 21st Nov. - 2nd Dec. there is a special deal - www.amazon.co.uk/b?node=17941707031&tag=gransnetforum-21 - £0.99 a month for the first 3 months, thereafter the normal £7.99 a month.) For that you get a credit for one free book a month.

You only keep the book you're listening to on your device. The rest of your library is kept available, but you need to download it again, to listen again.

That's badly explained. Sorry. You don't keep lots of books on your iPad.

Thanks. I hadn’t realised that.

I can listen to audio books on my kindle paperwhite through my Bluetooth headphones.

MayBee70 Sat 09-Nov-24 14:00:28

Do you have to listen through headphones?

Mollygo Sat 09-Nov-24 14:04:22

Yes although I suppose a Bluetooth speaker would pair up the same. I had to pay more for the one with Bluetooth.

Elegran Sat 09-Nov-24 18:31:07

You don't need headphones on the Kindle Fire

MayBee70 Sat 09-Nov-24 18:33:39

Thanks. Must get this sorted. I’ve been talking for far too long to get Audible!

My late husband used to belong to Listening Books it used to cost him about £20 a year, he downloaded them onto an MP3 player. www.listening-books.org.uk/

You’re right, but a kindle fire tablet is a different device, with different capabilities from a Kindle. It’s more like an iPad or an android tablet that you can access the internet or play games on.

My Audible books are on my tablet.
The only problem is I keep falling asleep!

Stansgran Sat 23-Nov-24 20:58:03

I’m still feeling terribly stupid as I ve bought my husband the Fire11 and am setting it up . I’ve now found my kindle library is open to him and I buy rubbish and not sure I want him to see my murders and romcoms.
How do I separate them? Please, please?

Sago Sun 24-Nov-24 08:20:11

You can also listen to audio books on Amazon Alexa.

Elegran Sun 24-Nov-24 09:20:34

If your husband has a separate Amazon account you can register it to him instead of to you. The books/ebooks/Audible would have to be bought by him (or by you on his account)

Elegran Sun 24-Nov-24 09:28:39

You can create categories for your books, so you could have "His"and "Hers" on the same account. He could still see what rubbish you were buying it he took the trouble to open your category. Does it matter? Would you mind if he bought nothing but books on how to tune up the engine to make his car into a formula one racer?

Stansgran Sun 24-Nov-24 13:13:58

Thank you Elegran. I bought all my Georgette Heyer teen reads during Covid for low moments and would be embarrassed for him to see how daft I was and also I had a spell of scandi noir which I have grown out of. Elegran I do wish you lived next door to me with your expertise. I think this fire 11 is actually too difficult for my husband as the Times doesn’t enlarge as much as on my iPad and then the keyboard has very small letters. So I think with his failing eyesight that will be too much for him. He did get despondent today . Reading has always been a big part of our lives.
