Susan Hill's 'I'm the King of the Castle', I've just reread it for tutoring purposes and had forgotten how excellent it is!

I'll second that. I think 'The Woman in Black' also by Susan Hill, is very good and quite short.

I read with the Year 4 children. Strangely interesting series of Sherlock Holmes books

You might try The Belle Fields and sequel Ashes of Roses by Lora Adams? Two short books I really enjoyed! Covers differences above stairs and below stairs in a big house late 1890's early 1900's. Very descriptive, fast moving, happy / sad times and a real surprise ending! Enjoy if these are chosen

I second Small Things like These by Claire Keegan.

James Joyce Dubliners. Short stories interlink but work equally well read independantly.

A really quick read.
