The song is rank hypocrisy on the part of one of the richest men in show business.
It is on a par with all those professional Scotsmen, like Billy Connolly and Sean Connery who live in the USA, and professional 'Scousers' who prefer Weybridge to Liverpool. By all means move on socially and geographically, but don't romanticise the place you have left - it if were that bloody good you would have stayed!

I don't connect the song and its lyrics to the person who wrote them, or where he lived - could never stand John Lennon, but I do think the song is special

There are lots of songs I love and I don't know the first thing about who might have written them - don't care as long as the song is good.

But the song isn't about Liverpool, or leaving it, or wanting to go back to it...I am still baffled by the accusation of hypocrisy!
