The song 'Imagine'

I think this song is one of those pop songs that sound very dreamy, and even 'worthy' on the surface, but in fact has no substance whatsoever when relating it to real life.

"Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace..."

Yes. Imagine. Because that's all it would ever be without people and politicians putting in real time and effort to change things.

"I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will live as one."

Join you where John? In bed with Yoko? 'Only sleeping'?

(I started a new thread for this, apart from my Hymns thread. smile

Always hated this dirge!

Anagram Thu 03-May-12 10:07:30

Never liked it. Pretentious twaddle!

imjingl Thu 03-May-12 10:14:58

susie - you know your profile pic, I think you might have vanished. I can't see you. I've checked with a magnifying glass. You can't be that small. shock

imjingl Thu 03-May-12 10:15:18

You sure you weren't the one taking the photo?

GoldenGran Thu 03-May-12 10:22:11

funny, I've always thought it was a slightly childlike dirge, but never voiced it before. Possibly because so many love and revere it.

Anagram Thu 03-May-12 10:42:12

I can see susie.

nanaej Thu 03-May-12 10:57:33

imjingl isn't the point of the lyrics that you would not need to put things right??? Idealistic but just imagine!

susiecb Thu 03-May-12 12:20:44

I am in the middle behind my nephew in a red anorak (him not me)!
Been absent this week as lap top died of old age and had to get a new one set up.

Greatnan Thu 03-May-12 12:34:22

susie????
The song is rank hypocrisy on the part of one of the richest men in show business.
It is on a par with all those professional Scotsmen, like Billy Connolly and Sean Connery who live in the USA, and professional 'Scousers' who prefer Weybridge to Liverpool. By all means move on socially and geographically, but don't romanticise the place you have left - it if were that bloody good you would have stayed!

glassortwo Thu 03-May-12 12:38:36

susie I have had a peek, but where is your Sister?

greatnan I agree all the so called stars all sing the praises of home but where do they live.... not at home!

merlotgran Thu 03-May-12 15:39:33

Hear hear, Greatnan

nanaej Thu 03-May-12 20:08:08

It wasn't Lennon's fault he left the world! wink

Greatnan Thu 03-May-12 20:39:43

He was living in New York when he died. Perhaps if he had stayed in Liverpool..............

Anne58 Thu 03-May-12 20:43:39

Can't stand it!

Anagram Thu 03-May-12 21:07:13

What have the words of 'Imagine' got to do with Lennon living moving away from Liverpool? I don't understand your point, Greatnan.

whenim64 Thu 03-May-12 21:33:31

I don't connect the song and its lyrics to the person who wrote them, or where he lived - could never stand John Lennon, but I do think the song is special smile

There are lots of songs I love and I don't know the first thing about who might have written them - don't care as long as the song is good.

Anagram Thu 03-May-12 21:50:13

But the song isn't about Liverpool, or leaving it, or wanting to go back to it...I am still baffled by the accusation of hypocrisy! confused

nanaej Thu 03-May-12 21:52:33

Why was it wrong of JL to travel and live somewhere different??

imjingl Thu 03-May-12 22:08:08

There was nothing wrong with John Lennon living in the US, or anywhere he wanted to live.

What's that got to do with the price of potatos the song 'Imagine'?

imjingl Thu 03-May-12 22:08:40

I'm just baffled Anagram.

Greatnan Fri 04-May-12 00:20:59

'Imagine no possessions' - written by a multi-millionaire. I think that is hypocrisy. Similarly, singing sentimental songs about a birthplace you couldn't wait to leave.

what about this strange song hallelujah...sat in the kitchen chair...cut my hair..what is all that about....
