trish do you do 'to order'? If so try leaflets at NCT / parent and toddler groups etc to get the word out on the street locally.

Trish I see it sold at Craft Fairs, Vintage Fairs etc.
The latter would be good especially if you use' 'recycled' fabrics. Add some mis-matched china, some home-made napkins etc to your stall and you have the makings of a tea party in the garden to inspire buyers! Good luck!

jo4 you can see on the website what they are about. I am just getting a group going here. More family oriented than most scout /cub/guides etc and less heirarchical in organisation.

bags it's a shame that you could not get together a group for Woodcraft with the expertise that you have with regard to embroidery, patchworking and the like I know many a little girl or boy would would welcome the challenge and your share your knowledge I have always found the members of Woodcraft to be very welcoming and I think they are also not given the publicity that they deserve.

ej, I did look out for woodland folk but no luck around here. Not a big enough population to start one up either. If one is philosophical (which I am), and willing to stick one's neck out in the scout assoc (which I am), the onlt stumbling block is the promise. I haven't made any promises. I've been accepted as a humanist. An atheist humanist, but so long as the word humanist is there, they can cope. Silly or what? The attitude of the olf fogeys at the top will change in time or the association will fizzle out. It's already struggling to find leaders, thus the compromise with people like me who are not religious but like what scouting is really about — the great outdoors and team work.

The wording is "do my best to do my duty" etc. Open to intepretation what one person's best is (it's never exactly the same as someone else's) and what constitutes duty. Simple. I didn't study philosophy for nothing, you know !

The Cubs make say the promise as is. My opinion is that it's almost (but not quite) worthless, as eight year olds aren't old enough to make promises, know who their god is (if any!) or what duty is. Most of my cubs are from families who have no religion (by the way).

I try to instill in them respect for self, respect for others, and respect for their surroundings. With that as grounding and a decent education in the rest of their lives, they should be fine.

The Beaver promise is almost perfect. It would be just right for everyone if the last four words were removed:

I promise to do my best to be kind and helpful and to love god.

They could change "love god" to "try to be good", which is what it really means, but that would be tautologous (see previous words of promise) as well as a bit yuck.

I'm not sure I even know what serving the queen means. I don't (serve) at any rate.

I neither serve the queen, nor do I see the monarchy as value for money. Don't see the need for shooting them, but they could all get useful jobs and stop living off the state.

ian42 I do not wish them dead but the royals are not special to me. I do not serve the queen as I have not been in her employ nor been in the military.

Today I did my bit for the Queen, when an anti-monarchist said that the Royal family should be lined up and shot. If I remember my history correctly once you could be done for treason for saying that. They said the Royal family are a waste of money. I laid into them by saying I and many others are honoured to serve her and her family.

Our very tiny village is resplendent with bunting (despite very high winds and possible dangers to our slightly older men, on ladders!), We had a crown-making morning for the children on Saturday which was well attended and great fun, and tomorrow a lunch in the village hall with, weather permitting, treasure hunts and games for the children in the farmer's field next door. So I'm off to make the pastry for the sausage rolls! We have really loved all the fuss and palaver, remember having a wonderful 25th Jubilee celebration when all the children were small and everyone but everyone came to our street party. As far as I am concerned, love it all!

The whole afternoon was put on hold to watch the pageant so dinner was delayed until 6.30 even though mr.G. insisted he was sooooo hungry he had to wait,Her Majesty was amazing and she certainly showed the rest of the World how it is done.
To-day I am doing the baking for the tea-party to-morrow so will have to get myself off this PC for a while,easier said than done though.

Was at work today, however I did see some of the pageant on TV, isn't the Queen a wonderful woman stood for over four hours and in the rain and cold, makes me feel proud to be English.

Just got back from town day which takes place annually on the late Spring Bank Hols! Tomorrow there is a Big Lunch picnic by the bandstand and on Monday there is a royal visit and sports for all in the town centre.
