SAD syndrome?

Some of us admit to feeling not a little down in the dumps/fed up/emotional/p****d off at the moment and I wonder if it is to do with the fact that we are not getting our sunshine and vitamin D? We might expect to feel a bit like this in February after a long dreary winter, but mid-July? I don't have to worry about entertaining young children, my holiday was not ruined and I have gven up on the garden, so why do I find it so enervating to wake up yet again to raindrops on the window? To get soaked when Grace has her bedtime walkie? To want the heating on?
Oh for just a day or two of sunshine to make us all smile again

Me too , my garden is like a bog and I do love my garden.

Grannylin Sat 14-Jul-12 20:22:48

Right I think we need to get a grip.Anyone beat this diary entry for July 8 after a weekend of floods and our village on Sky News

Think I've hit rock bottom.Nothing left to say.No future. Me, OH, the dog and nothing.
Seems laughable now- Decided that I needed to "embrace the weather".Got up this morning, raining for the 10 th day, got OH to drive us to Cornwall. Guess what? No rain all day, sat on the beach, fish and chips, best day for ages!

gracesmum Sat 14-Jul-12 20:32:37

Just how I have been feeling, but Cornwall too far and SW looks as wet as here. Excellent sentiment though.

Just thinking that today having realised that, what with work and decorating etc I hardly go outside these days. I know my body's been craving a bit of sun for ages and I'm sure that's why all of my joints are hurting so much. When we had a spell of decent weather a few weeks ago [think it lasted for all of three days] I felt so much better. Where in Cornwall did you go, Grannylin?

jeni Sat 14-Jul-12 20:45:26

It is just as wet! I feel like cancelling a weeks tribunals and nipping off to somewhere warm!
But if I did, all the tribunals would be cancelled as medical members are short and it would mean the claimants who have probably allready waited months would have to wait longer,
There are times when having a conscience is very inconvenient!

The sun is peeping out occasionally folks. it did so late this afternoon and I rushed out and gardened. It never seems to be long enough to feel that I can sit and relax in it. But that may be because the garden has been so overgrown with all the rain.
But if the sun comes out we should rush out into it.

Grannylin Sat 14-Jul-12 20:48:41

We went to Fowey, about an hour away from us and then to Polkerris. The forecast was for rain in the afternoon but it didn't happensmile

I have SAD and usually it improves in summer but this year whilst it's a bit better it's not improving as it should.

AlieOxon Sat 14-Jul-12 21:07:58

My daughter had some sun but I didn't.....15 miles makes a difference...I hope for some tomorrow, today was so depressing...........

Lovely sunshine in Birmingham today grin.

I was watching the athletics in Crystal Palace - crowd were cowering under umbrellas but hanging on in there. Kenyans shivering, especially the ones that had problems with the starting technology for their race. The crowd's persistence was rewarded by Christine Ohorogu (our only Olympic champion in athletics last time - in the doldrums since) winning her race in a torrential downpour.

I hasten to add i was curled up in my lounge!

I am in Brisbane at the moment and it is supposed to be dry and sunny at this time of year but it hasn't stopped raining. This miserable weather is to continue on for a bit, no doubt while I am here. confused My son put down planks of wood to walk on there is so much water it is squealchy.

Ariadne Sat 14-Jul-12 22:44:40

Oh yes! We need sunshine. I recognise this now you've mentioned it. We have the two DGDs for the weekend and have played in the conservatory listening to the rain drumming down. (Shhhh - I even put the heating on briefly!)

Now yous all know what it feels like where I am, most of the time wink. Every day with sunshine is a glorious bonus smile Mind you, I guess we have scenery too, which is beautiful even in the mist and rain. Right now I'm looking out of my sitting-room window and all I can see are sky (full of grey cloud and rain), hills, trees and a bit of loch. It's beautiful. The bottom part of my garden on the hillside is always boggy. Garden party heeled shoes would simply get stuck and come off even in the middle of a dry period. Hiking boots or wellies are the order of the day if you want dry feet, "jellies" or Vibram Fivefingers if you don't mind getting wet.

Down south needed rain. Yous moaned about dryness. Yous got rain. Yous moan about wetness. The gods cannae win! wink wink

It's our local highland games today. I will be helping wave the flag at the Rotary stall which is to raise awareness about ShelterBoxes. Thinking about the people who need those somehow puts British bad weather in perspective for me because compared to them, we're just singing in the rain (with all good wishes to those in Britain whose homes have been flooded).

At least it is Winter in Brisbane, Faye!
I love the climate here, because we have snow, lots and lots of snow, in Winter, but lots of sunshine as well.
There is a definite correlation between being out in the country and happiness. I ought to feel deeply depressed because of my on-going estrangement from one of my daughters, but it is hard to feel down when I am able to walk for hours almost every day surrounded by glorious mountain scenery.
I can only repeat my offer to any women members to come and stay with me!

Mamie Sun 15-Jul-12 07:18:57

Have you not got the rain in your bit Greatnan? We have friends from the village on holiday in Haute Savoie and they say it has been very mixed. Dreadful here in Normandy; we went to a wedding last weekend and the poor bride had mud all up the hem of her dress. Soggy, cold and windy, although this coming week looks better.

JessM Sun 15-Jul-12 07:22:04

Glad to hear you are happy Greatnan, that is as it should be - a sad little corner of your heart I know - but on a day to day basis it is nor overwhelming you.
Brisbane must have high rainfall Faye. Tropical wet rather than UK temperate wet. The prevailing winds from the Pacific Ocean bring their rain to the Queensland coast, leave it there and then travel across the huge arid heart of the continent, without a drop left. But also known as the "sunshine coast" isn't it, so both extremes. I hope Charlie is doing ok.

Greatnan Sun 15-Jul-12 07:24:57

Thank you, Jess.
We have had some showers, but I have only missed one day of walking because of rain. Each valley in the Alps has a microclimate and the Vallee Verte seems to be very favoured. I actually enjoy the rain too,but I don't walk in it because my glasses soon get fogged up!

PRINTMISS Sun 15-Jul-12 08:02:42

Living in the south, I think we should remember the saying 'be careful what you wish for', but oh! dear!, I do so wish for just a little sunshine - proof that it is still there, at least.

Bags Sun 15-Jul-12 08:23:26

A common local comment up here when the sun comes out is "Omigod! what's that big yellow thing in the sky?!" wink

Think positive: those southern reservoirs will be filling up and perhaps even the artesian wells. jess will be able to correct me on that.
