Now! yippeee!

Mamie Wed 05-Sept-12 08:39:25

I liked the "chocolate breeze block" comment, though.

I am still thoroughly enjoying this series. I used to hate creme caramel as a child, so it is one of the few things they have done that I have never made. I had forgotten how many of the techniques I have tried through the years, not necessarily successfully! I see they are doing raised pork pies next week, which used to be one of my favourites. It is funny how preferences change - I remember begging my mother for shop-bought cakes when I was young!
I don't know who I want to win the Bake Off, I have a different favourite each week.

I have never watched cookery programs thinking I would be bored.

However, got watching GB Bakeoff last night by accident and found it fascinating.

I Sky+ this last night and am currently watching it (and using the laptop, obviously). I find it fascinating - unfortunately I had never caught it before the last few episodes of the previous series.

paul and Mary=Good Cop/Bad Cop!!!!

But not that way round

JO4 Wed 05-Sept-12 18:11:51

I've never been able to get my treacle (syrup) tart quite as good as my mum's used to be. It's difficult getting the amount of breadcrumbs just right.

Mamie Wed 12-Sept-12 13:45:01

Well you lot are hopeless. Here I am stuck in the land of Catalan TV and you don't even give me an update on what happened...... grin
Here it is scorchio....

Anagram Wed 12-Sept-12 21:47:24

Come on ladies - someone must have watched this last night! I only saw the last half hour and hadn't been following it, so I don't know any of the names - but must admit I was gripped! That Key Lime Pie sounded so scrumptious...
Sorry, Mamie, I don't even know the name of the girl who had to go (dark hair, but not Danni).

merlotgran Wed 12-Sept-12 22:16:35

Ryan was star baker and Maneesha? (sp) had to go. I think someone chops their hand off next week grin

Ariadne Thu 13-Sept-12 04:30:08

Don't we all know that moment when a bit of the pastry case cracks and falls off? Mind you, I usually have a bit with which to patch it, but I suppose the judges might notice?

Notsogrand Thu 13-Sept-12 05:04:33

I watched the last 2 episodes last night and just love it. I don't remember all the names yet, but the key lime pie chap is amazing. He seems to bake in such a chaotic way, with things always going wrong, yet the end product is usually very good.

Mamie Thu 13-Sept-12 06:29:32

Ah thank you. Not surprised about Maneesha. We made pork pies for the village picnic once, but had trouble getting the pastry even so that the jelly stayed in. We managed it in the end and they were delicious.

any good bakers here?? I have tried egg custards but seem rubbery, anyone got a foolproof recipe smile DH loves egg custards and would love to make my mum one, they used to bake one in a cafe near where I live..it was always so fresh and soft but nicely set (and not rubbery) grin Im not bothered about the pastry base I just want to bake the egg custard in a dish on it's own.

gracesmum Thu 13-Sept-12 22:26:20

That reminds me I LOVE custard tarts.smile

Grannybug Thu 13-Sept-12 22:57:15

Vanilla slices ! Mmmmmmmm

Mamie Wed 10-Oct-12 16:55:03

So, who is it going to be? I liked Danny, but she did go a bit haywire last night. Probably, Brendan, I think. I am amazed how little discussion there is on this thread, Mumsnet has over a thousand posts on it. Don't we do baking on Gransnet?

Grannyeggs Wed 10-Oct-12 17:05:20

I do baking Mamie, and I am addicted to the Great British Bake Offi was sad that Danny went out, I thought up until then she had been consistently good. I would love it to be James or John, but I suspect it will be Brendan as he has hardly put a foot wrong - I find him terribly smug, but he is good.

Mamie Wed 10-Oct-12 17:13:53

I agree, but I don't think John is as good as James. They are very funny about Brendan on Mumsnet!

Grannyeggs Wed 10-Oct-12 17:24:17

I must have a look, I find him really annoying, Brendan, I mean, cooking aside, James is sweet.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 10-Oct-12 17:31:19

Much discussion on a weekly basis on our twitter page. We are absolutely obsessed keen viewers and not averse to a slice of cake <coughs a lot>

Last night we nailed our colours to the mast and we are backing James. We like his bike (how yummy did it look?) and we like him too grin

Ana Wed 10-Oct-12 17:34:43

I like James! Brendan is irritating and John isn't consistent, but James is just so likeable, as well as being a good all-rounder in the competition so far.

annodomini Wed 10-Oct-12 17:56:01

I felt uncharitably pleased when the judges found fault with Brendan's cake last night! He is so annoyingly precise. James is the more creative I think and far from smug. He has been the best for the past two weeks. Who else would have thought of a choux pastry bike? Go James!

merlotgran Wed 10-Oct-12 19:13:31

I couldn't find this thread last night so I started another one.

I would like Brendan to win because he is such a good baker. I know he's a bit smug and I think this could be his downfall in the final but he has been the best so far.

Ana Wed 10-Oct-12 19:15:28

Nobody likes a smart**rse! grin
