So sorry to hear about Max Bygraves dying, but he had a good innings. I loved him for years, always made sure I caught all his TV shows.

This is really rather spooky. My grandchildren have been staying with us and one of them loves me to teach her songs. So this week I taught her Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer katsanella bogen by the sea.
The night Max died she and I gave the rest of the family our premier performance....... Oo-er.
RIP Max and thank you for all those lovely moments on Saturday mornings with Uncle Mac. xx

Nonu -- yes! I remember talking to the Ladybirds on that show, and they said much the same thing... lucky old him, eh?

Was he responsible for that bloody mouse with clogs on song?

annodomini Sun 02-Sept-12 09:39:53

Not to mention Tulips from Amsterdam which I have had as an earworm ever since I heard of his death.

It wasn't Max Bygraves. Ronnie Hilton recorded A Windmill in Old Amsterdam. Freddie and the Dreamers also covered it, although I don't remember their version.

Maybe it was the damn tulips that confused me. Both songs were frightful. [vomiting emoticon]

I've now got that mouse song as an earworm - serves me right! grin

Aaaah, I loved both those records, I was a great Ronnie Hilton fan as well.

I can remember seeing Max B on the stage at the Wood Green empire in the early 50's with Archie Andrews!

My grandchildren adore his novelty songs: You're a pink toothbrush, Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellenbogen by the Sea.
I once heard that his first public performance was on the prom at Southend when his mother realised she didn't have the train fare home so she told him to sing.
