He died today aged 98 .

Sad (blue) TBH I thought he was dead already. I loved 'I'm a blue toothbrush'.

kittylester Sat 01-Sept-12 14:50:06

that, obviously, was meant to be sad - I'm having a bad day.

Nonu Sat 01-Sept-12 15:04:30

I did also .

I remember thinking "Not my kind of act, but I might as well see what he does..." He came on stage and grabbed that audience by the throat and never let go - quite amazing, the display of what I can only call 'star quality'. I watched the second house, too, and it was the same thing; he didn't do anything that I would like, but I couldn't take my eyes off him. Brilliant!

I might be speaking out of turn here , but although he looked like butter wouldn"t melt , was a bit of a "laddo " with the ladeez . Not that thats got much to do with anything . grin

Loved him, in our teens we would go to the Lewisham Gaumont on Sunday afternoons/evenings, when they had 'live' entertainment. Max Bygraves was a favourite, I think he was a 'local' man, and he entertained the crowd really well. His 'You need hands' was a later favourite, and of course he went from strength to strength from those early days. We also saw Harry Secombe there, and he too kept everyone laughing. No smutty jokes, just good clean fun. Don't make 'em like that any more.

Ariadne Sat 01-Sept-12 17:11:48

He'd have fitted in well in Lil's bar, (from what I have seen of it) innuendos, slight salaciousness and all.

Not one of my favourite performers.

He lived here in Bournemouth for many years, his house was on the cliff top. We often saw him drive around our little suburb in his Rolls Royce, he used our local shops and was very happy to sign autographs, have pictures taken and generally be very pleasant. His son also lived here and was a patient of the Medical Centre I worked in - as was Ed Stewart [aka Stewpot]. Oh and Mungo Jerry lives down the end of my road, see him often and he is a big head!! Whereas Max Bygraves was always a gent. R.I.P.
