Can I send bacon in the post to France - anyone know?

This sounds really daft, I know, but my DGD and her boyfriend are working in France and it's shortly going to be his 21st birthday. She's asked me to post a pack of bacon out to him, along with some crumpets, so that he can have them on the morning of his birthday. Apart from the fact that the bacon may just go 'off', which she's willing to chance - would it be legal to send bacon by air? Told you it sounded daft confused! She hasn't seen any bacon where she is sad.

Yes, harrigan, I have been adapting for ten years! I just happen to like corned beef hash, and it is not the same without gravy granules.

We find poitrine fumee is perfectly acceptable with our fried eggs for sunday breakfast!

I have had Easter Eggs delivered to Ireland from British Cornershop.co.uk , see Elegran's post. It was good service and not too expensive.
I know you can buy Easter eggs in Ireland but these had to come in a parcel from Grandma.

I find all 'bacon' products here to be as thin as tissue paper - or else you can have four slices which are about 1/4 inch thick.

DGD had told me that they just weren't able to find 'proper bacon', so that must have been the sort she came across, Greatnan. You've all been very helpful, so I'll go for it - I'll buy a couple of packs of 'smoked' and a couple of packs of crumpets (pikelets where I come from), and get them out to them! And if I'm 'done' for it.....I shall refer the Customs to GN! wink

grin

You have to tell them how thick you want your poitrine fumee sliced! You go to the charcuterie or the charcuterie counter in the supermarket and they will slice it from the big piece as you want. I would like to be able to give you the exact number of the slice, but it varies, so you need to say moins / plus epaisse according to how you want it.

I can do that at the big Casino, Mamie, but at my smaller shop you just get whatever is in the packs!

It would be much easier to ask a friend who is going to the UK to bring you some back smile (guess who?)

Greatnan Wed 12-Sept-12 19:36:12

Hee-hee - and I wasn't even hinting!

Grannylin Wed 12-Sept-12 19:49:31

Are you taking orders granjura?
Does it work the other way too? I would love some Grand'mere coffee, some mayonnaise, some langue de chats biscuits..............grin

granjura Wed 12-Sept-12 20:09:20

Depends where you live Granylin smile If you are anywhere near Dartmouth, Cobham or Market Harborough - it might work smile

Grannylin Wed 12-Sept-12 20:33:02

Well, whenever I went on holiday to whatever winter or summer resort my DS was working in, I always took him a Melton Mowbray pork pie. No ill effects on him and no arrest for me. grin

harrigran Wed 12-Sept-12 23:21:51

I am always being given lists of must-haves to bring back from France, we could have a thriving business going grin

Nelliemoser Thu 13-Sept-12 03:32:13

You could try sending bacon to Denmark on a "coals to newcastle" basis.

Greatnan Thu 13-Sept-12 07:31:31

I would have asked you to bring me some bacon, Anno, if I had thought of it - but perhaps it would have been a bit insensitive as you don't eat it meat!

Marelli Thu 13-Sept-12 08:33:27

glass -grin! DH is being very sarcastic now, and saying "Huh, why don't you send them half-a-dozen eggs while you're at it?" He has no soul, and no sense of adventure, either! Bonny sight that he is, sitting there in his ancient dressing gown, reading the Radio Times to see what he can control on the telly tonight...wink

glammanana Thu 13-Sept-12 09:30:04

mamie the same way of slicing in Spain ask for mas/meos for more or less rashers and I used to have it sliced on their machine at I think no.2 and it came out a reasonable thickness,I also used to pick my steak and have it minced in front of me twice none of the added stuff that you get here in UK,and not a lot of difference in price either.

annodomini Thu 13-Sept-12 10:37:40

What a shame, Greatnan: given that I had no objection to carrying pork pies around Europe, a few rashers of bacon wouldn't have bothered me at all.

Myrtleflower70 Wed 10-Nov-21 13:06:16

Bacon is full of preservatives, not least salt. put in a box with some polystyrene pieces and one or two sandwich box sized frozen blocks. Seal up and write sweets or chocolates on the outside. Post by airmail. Nay problems. Otherwise send in temperature controlled boxes for shipping from Amazon. x

This thread dates back to 2012!
Lovely to see Greatnan and indeed a previous incarnation of our Kali2
(The bacon could have walked there by now- did you send it OP?)

midgey Wed 10-Nov-21 13:12:46

This post is very old Myrtleflower…..so much so you may have noticed we are no longer in the EU!

midgey Wed 10-Nov-21 13:13:20

Crossed post!
