Can I send bacon in the post to France - anyone know?

This sounds really daft, I know, but my DGD and her boyfriend are working in France and it's shortly going to be his 21st birthday. She's asked me to post a pack of bacon out to him, along with some crumpets, so that he can have them on the morning of his birthday. Apart from the fact that the bacon may just go 'off', which she's willing to chance - would it be legal to send bacon by air? Told you it sounded daft confused! She hasn't seen any bacon where she is sad.

Just to add, JenniferEccles - they got married 2 years ago last August and are expecting their second baby a week on Friday! ☺️

That is a lovely update greenmossgiel. ?

If any package is sent overseas it has to have a customs declaration, a series of codes that says exactly what it is, probably bacon is not allowed, your shipper will tell you, in any case it will be bad when it gets there.
You can take personal food on the car ferry to France, maybe they just don’t bother to check, possibly not by air.

Katie59, it wasn’t bad when it got there. They ate it with much enjoyment! ??

Me neither proper gravy all the way for me smile I was once in an airport queue with a ham roll in my bag. Sniffer dogs were being used, probably to look for drugs. They came right up to my bag and sniffed and didn't seem to notice! My Jack Russell who I've sadly lost since would have sniffed in out in two seconds flat!

The dogs are specifically trained to sniff out illegal drugs, grannyrebel7. They’d only be interested in your lunch if you’d stuffed a wodge of cocaine in with the ham. smile

A sniffer dog was very interested in my bag at an American airport and the official said I must have been carrying ham rolls in there. No, I hadn't.

At first I was wondering if the bacon had been sent and had just arrived after 9 years!

Lovely update Marelli aka greenmossgiel, thank you

Everything is really tricky post Brexit - even the British Corner Shop have had to move part of their operation to the NL as their boxes kept getting impounded by Customs at Harwich (including one of mine because of ... tartare sauce)

On a good note British style bacon is back at my local Lidl - used to be British nut is now Irish

An old thread, with a rambling conversation, interesting posts, and what seems like fond memories of past events and people. Marvellous!

Many years ago I used to go on a day trip to Calais with friends. We would buy salami, cheese and wine, never had trouble with customs. I think if the bacon is vacuum packed it should be OK. I've bought cheese in France and Italy which was vacuum packed for the journey and it was fine.

This must be the funniest heading for a post on Gransnet yet! grin

(I'm sorry I can't help)

Nah, we're amateurs here. Someone has just shown me an active discussion on Mumsnet with the title How many times a day do you force a banana. In to you?.

It's about potassium deficiency. Allegedly.

It is interesting to see how many people post without reading the thread though. ? ??
Am I the only poster from nine years ago without a name change?

Mamie Wed 10-Nov-21 17:49:22

Cold where are you? No bacon in our Lidl in Normandy. ?

Maggiemaybe Wed 10-Nov-21 18:16:59

I’ve still got my 2012 name, Mamie. There can’t be many of us.

No Mamie. I'm another old Gransnetter with the same name.

I actually started off as Greenmossgiel a couple of months after Gransnet began. However, I realised one day, that I may be recognised by a family member after I posted something without thinking, so I asked if I could change my username to Marelli.
A few years later, I noticed that another, newer member had a username very similar to that, so it was agreed I could revert to Greenmossgiel.

I spotted Soop and Elegran when I read back again.

dustyangel Wed 10-Nov-21 21:21:45

I’ve enjoyed this thread, so good to see Greenmossgiel and Mamie again and like soop and Elegran, though not as eloquent I haven’t changed my name in twelve years either. But it can’t really be that long, can it? hmm

How about sending a pig instead?

You mean a rotten one, with a Trebuchet - as used to in sieges?

Movedalot

It is perfectly legal to send anything legal between any countries in the EU.

But the UK is no longer in the EU! So NO it is not allowed.

How will they know? Well the Customs have sniffer dogs, and also open a significant proportion of parcels for checks. And of course you have to write a declaration of contents to be stuck on parcel- what the content is and value.

Did you check the date of Movedalot’s post Kali2 ?

Read through the thread - you’ll see some familiar usernames that you will recognise wink including your own

A great update greenmossgiel!
Married two years ago and now a baby on the way! Perfect!

I expect there are loads of threads from years ago which could make very interesting reading if the original poster were to come back with an update.
