What message? What point? It's a tee shirt with the word bipolar and a "smiley" that looks different depending on which way you look at it. There is no message; there is no point. Then there are blobs – eyes or something else – but what are they if they are underneath the smiling or sad mouth part? Would a tee shirt with the words "brain damaged" and a picture of a bomb be light-hearted?

Bipolar is not a just type of depression; it is massively more than depression. I don't see it as being something light-hearted. Sorry guys!

JO5......spouting about it....

Are you referring to me? I am giving my reasons for finding such 'jokes' offensive.

Greatnan Fri 16-Nov-12 20:26:58

Jingle - you are coming perilously close to breaching forum etiquette.

Nanadog Fri 16-Nov-12 20:34:38

I upset someone on the forum ages ago about a flippant comment I made about schizophrenia and still feel bad about it now [I never meant to hurt anyone and I now try to think very carefully about what I say]. Personally I think that anyone bipolar who sees someone wearing such a t shirt would find it upsetting, and it could affect them, but that's just my personal opinion. Something that has annoyed me recently has been film/tv personalities saying they are bipolar [not Stephen Fry] as if it's something you catch and get over like a cold. But I'm no expert on the subject. The only t shirts I own at the moment with pictures on are Banksy ones, because I think he makes such clever statements. I'd love to have the Tesco's one.

Greatnan Sat 17-Nov-12 09:39:48

Yes,I agree it was quite wrong of jingle to tell absent to piss off and to tell me that I am not worth a reply, but we are both mature adults and we won't fall apart. Jingle knows full well that some of the things she posts will attract opposing views - which is why she continues to make controversial posts.

Bags Sat 17-Nov-12 09:48:26

Controversy is fine.

crimson, I don't think there's anything intrinsically wrong with anyone, famous or not, saying they are bipolar if they actually are. I suspect those who speak out genuinely are trying to raise awareness about the illness. I think that's a good idea – it might put to rest some silly ideas about mental illness.

Is Stephen Fry bipolar?

Greatnan Sat 17-Nov-12 10:01:05

Crimson, I don't think you should feel guilty - there was a time when many of us would joke about being schizophrenic, before we realised what a terrible illness it is. We are mostly more sensitive to other people's feelings now, and I don't think that is a bad thing but I am quite sure that you would never knowingly offend anybody.
Perhaps I am more aware than most people of the terrible damage that mental illness can do, not only to the sufferer, but to their entire family.

crimson Sat 17-Nov-12 10:08:42

Stephen has long spoken out about his problem. It's people like Catherine Zeta Jones and Kerry Catona that bother me [although more so Catona as she seems to make a career of weight gain/loss; mental illness; failed marriages etc and makes more money out of each event than most of us earn in a lifetime].

Ana Sat 17-Nov-12 10:09:44

Yes he is Bags. He has talked extensively about his illness.

Zengran Sat 17-Nov-12 10:10:59

Oh dear! This is exactly why I had given up on visiting GN a while back. I thought I would give it another go..........................my mistake sad
