Ana , just tried to PM you, but it went a bit funny, not sure if it worked!

I see what you mean, absent, about seeing the logo in the context, so to speak, of others produced by the same company. A lot of them are what be called bad taste. However, I was only looking at the logo in its own context of a communicating hieroglyph. In that sense, I still think it's good. If the intentioon of the designer was negative in any way then that intention is to be deplored, but it seems to me that such an intention may have failed, at least partly, since several people who have looked at the logo in its own context (as I described above) have simply seen it as a good hieroglyphic image.

In short, some of us have remained detached and simply viewed the image as an image and judged its effectiveness in communicating on that basis only. This is, I freely admit, a rather mathematical approach. It can be very useful.

I have no mathematical skills Bags but I still agree with you on this one. I have professional and personal experience of mental health problems but I still can't see why this is offensive. confused

To my mind, it isn't demeaning anyone, it isn't poking fun at anyone, it isn't rude or dismissive. I must be missing something.

I was interested in JOs comments some posts back about "Why do I allow myself to be goaded" Pots and kettles come to mind.

Ana Sat 17-Nov-12 22:18:05

No, I don't think you are, nightowl. People obviously view things from different perspectives and we should respect that, but we shouldn't have to make apologies for our own take on the matter in question.

I was under the impression that JO5 thought the t-shirt was funny, not the illness, I've looked back through the posts and can't find anything from her that implies she thinks it is amusing to have a mental illness. Just what is up with some people where they see offence where none is intended?

nanadog the point is that there no evidence that all this awareness raising actually does save lives.
Maybe doctors need to be more open minded to the possibility of lumpy breasts in young women being cancerous. But there is no reason to think that throwing energy into encouraging young women to self-examine is going to save any lives. Any more than telling them that if they feel run down they might have leukaemia.
Someone once told me a story about a middle aged colleague who told her she thought she might have cancer. She actually had an ulcerated cancer of the breast and had not consulted her doctor. It was not because she had not noticed a lump but because she was afraid to go to the doctor. A friend of mine had a mother who died of vulval cancer. She was too embarrassed to go to the doctor. Awareness on its own does not necessarily save lives.
Charities don't always agitate for things that will save lives. e.g. if this charity started campaigning for mammograms to be given in this age group it would be a pointless exercise. Mammograms do not diagnose cancers in young breast tissue.
If people want to save lives by their charitable donations the best bet is to give money to research. You could argue that giving money to "awareness raising " charities is taking money away from the research.
Hope that explains.

.jess we are digressing from the OP too much, but I thought this worthy of a separate thread and have just started one up. You may prefer to carry your thoughts across to that.

Bags Sun 18-Nov-12 09:41:07

nightowl, I think you do have the mathematical skill I was talking about: the ability to cut out all the dross, look at the information one is presented with, and only that information, without any emotional clutter, and not make judgements about intentions that might be associated with the information smile. It is the skill of focussing on what is, based on the cold hard evidence of information contained in symbols, and nothing else.

nightowl Sun 18-Nov-12 10:08:53

Gosh Bags I am gobsmacked. (Apologies to those who hate the word). Have skills I never knew. [big headed emoticon] grin

Bags Sun 18-Nov-12 10:09:56

grin

nightowl Sun 18-Nov-12 10:11:07

Btw I have copied your words so that I can keep them close by and quote them to anyone who ever doubts my skills. Thanks Bags smile

soop Sun 18-Nov-12 12:23:35

Bags I never was good at maths. Hey ho...we can't all be clever-clogs. smile

jeni Sun 18-Nov-12 12:36:26

GNHQ I'm shouting! WHAT HAS GONE WRONG WITH THE PMing?

soop Sun 18-Nov-12 12:40:19

jeni ...it's a nightmare. I've never shouted so much at a screen that can't answer back! hmm confused

jeni Sun 18-Nov-12 12:44:27

If everybody SHOUTS they may do something?

Ana Sun 18-Nov-12 12:54:42

There is a PM thread....perhaps we should all SHOUT on that? confused

jeni Sun 18-Nov-12 13:33:01

Where? I can't find it?can you bump?

absentgrana Sun 18-Nov-12 13:36:32

I think the PMs do get sent; it just doesn't look like it. In fact, if you click on the GNHQ button more than once, the PM gets sent more than once, but it would be helpful if this was sorted out.

annodomini Sun 18-Nov-12 13:50:35

Have you checked your 'sent' box?

jeni Sun 18-Nov-12 13:53:12

Ah yes it is sent . Very confusing for my simple almost 68year old brain!confused

Ana Sun 18-Nov-12 13:55:13

What is the point or purpose of that pop-up exclamation mark box? You can't get rid of it...

jeni Sun 18-Nov-12 13:58:13

We have thread going now. Pms

Ana Sun 18-Nov-12 14:06:04

I know. I started it! grin
